Which strange Olympic event are you watching?

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 28 July, 2012 at 11:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 37

I thought we could keep track of the more esoteric Olympic sports that Hitchers find themselves watching over the coming weeks.

I'll start. This morning, I watched the Women's 10m Air Rifle.

I'm watching men's gymnastics at the moment, not very obscure I'm afraid. I'd like to watch handball at some point to find out what it actually is.

Lots of bits and pieces on the red button. Still watching the cycling road race, it's not working out perfectly for team GB right now...

Today I've watched swimming, handball (now I know what it is!), Judo and tennis. Impressed so far!

I know - not quite sure what happened there! Most disappointed. Fingers crossed for the time trial on Wednesday & the track events.

Yes, he got banned from the Tour de France for it a few years back. The tactics for the whole of that race were just not what we needed - the rest of the field knew that if they let us stay at the front, nobody else stood a chance, hence the early breakaway, and then nobody else would help us bring the peloton back towards the breakaway. Just hope Bradley Wiggins hasn't been totally broken before the time trial.

We had a good morning at the rowing heats though!

    So a conspiracy - nice!

I think if a competitor is found guilty of doping they should be banned from competing for life.

I don't know what is classed as a 'strange olympic event' but I normally don't watch any sport and have been glued to it for the last 2 days!

Yesterday we watched swimming, road cycling, artistic gymnastics (male) and tennis (murray disaster) then today is Canoe Slalom which I am amazed by!!!!

I was watching Judo earlier, still don't really understand it. I loved the little England commentary though - they were obsessed with the village this guy was from (North Lopham in Norfolk, anyone?) and when he won they were shouting "Norfolk's finest, Colin Oates!" which for some reason made me laugh a lot.

Just down the road from my Auntie!

I'm watching the ladies gymnastics and seeing the big crowd of army men in the audience is making me laugh. I dare say women's beach volleyball was first choice, but fit ladies in leotards came next.

The gymnasts always amaze me to watch, I wish I'd stuck at it for longer.

I've watched handball, women's gymnastics, bit of football, rowing heats, swimming and a bit of the cycling (poor Cav ☹️). My OH used to play handball when he was younger (it's MASSIVE in Denmark) so he was explaining the rules to me. Apparently a score of 19 is a really low score by their standards! I'd love to have a go at handball, I was ok at netball but I think I'd be better at this. Speaking of which I'm still baffled by the fact that netball isn't an Olympic event!

Made Boy watch judo yesterday - Women's sub46kg category. He was amazed at tiny women who could very feasibly beat the shite out of him.

I think the army guys were given tickets to fill the empty seats left by all those naughty sponsors who haven't used up their tickets.

The gym this afternoon was awesome, Tweddle on the bars was breathtaking. I really hope she can replicate that in the finals. I did it for a couple of years (my team won the girls' independent schools national championships! My coach is the BBC commentator) but I'm not really built for it and was never brilliant.

Missed most of the sport today as I went out with OH, watched a bit of diving and canoe slalom when I got back (that one looks really fun!) Sounds like I missed out with the women's road race and gymnastics today. I've got tickets for the women's gymnastics team final on Tuesday, really excited now.

I suspect this is because men's netball is practically non-existent and certainly doesn't exist as in any formal sense (there are only a few male national teams). This is therefore not within the Olympic remit or ethos!

The archery was being played at the pub we were at. It looked quite fun actually, but we were secretly wishing someone would put a Robin Hood outfit on

I've been watching bits and bobs - cycling, gymnastics (Beth Tweddle was amazing on bars!) swimming, canoeing and rowing diving, archery. Got tickets for the slalom tomorrow so I'm excited about that! Made myself a top with union flag material to wear and have flags to wave. H thinks I'm a little odd!

This centre is just down the road from our new house! You can pay to use the white water bit it but its £50 each for 20 minutes and you need a team of people...

A friend of mine is going to Rio next year (they are spending a year touring South America) and they are getting a tour of the Olympic stadium builds!

Mini, do you have Sky? If so, they have 25 extra channels devoted to the Olympics starting at channel 450.

I thought Netball always used to me. I'm sure it's something to do with there not being that many countries that play it? Correct me if I'm wrong.
