Ebay wedding dress - my experience (share your own too!)

helenparki, 27 March, 2012 at 13:01 Posted on Planning 0 20

I just wanted to share my experience with other brides to be when to comes to buying copied wedding dresses from China off ebay as I’ve seen threads on here from ladies asking about dresses on ebay etc.. I'm not naming anyone or anything, I'm sharing my experiences.

I’ve had two dresses off ebay, both from different sellers. My first one looked amazing on the photos and communication with the seller was good too. I sent over my measurements and paid the £75 inc P&P charges. I waited about 6 weeks and it arrived (after being stuck in Customs for a few days) I’d ordered a beautiful diamond white dress with diamante bodice and a lovely train, scattered with diamantes as well. Beautiful or so I thought…!

The quality was terrible, there were loads of bits of random pieces of cut off material sewn all over it and there were diamantes hanging off it too. The colour also wasn’t right – it was too white, so white that it was almost blue! I decided I didn’t like it and went on the hunt for another dress. We only have a small budget so I headed for ebay again. This time, I found a different dress from another seller in China. I checked her feedback and it was 99% - the main complaints were the P&P charges.

This time, I picked a dress based on the Pronovios dress, Fuente. It looked beautiful. I paid £90 inc P&P this time and hoped it’d be better than the first one. Again, all measurements were given and 6 weeks later, it arrived.

This dress was beautiful – perfect I thought. The fit was perfect, quality so much better. I loved it. Until my mum took photos. The dress had a layer of tulle over the bodice and down over the train, which to the eye looked amazing, but as soon as the camera flash went off, it resembled a scrumpled up carrier bag. It was horrible. I couldn’t get the photos out of my head and there was no way I could wear it on my wedding day.

So 10 weeks before my big day, I was dress-less and I’d spent almost £200 on 2 dresses that I hated. I was gutted.

I’ve now bought a beautiful Maggie Sottero dress (borrowed the money from Bank of Mum) and I can’t tell you how happy I am with it. It’s perfect and I feel like a proper bride.

I also must say, I have bought 2 bridesmaid dresses from ebay aswell, from a seller in Birmingham, and they are fantastic!

My post is one to warn Brides to Be to be wary when buying on ebay – the wedding dresses are nothing like the original designers and I think it is worth paying that bit more for an original dress. I know there are some Hitchers that have had a good experience, they were the lucky ones.

I've added a photo of the 2nd dress with me wearing it and the original so you can see the difference!

I had considered buying from China, but it really is a case of 'buyer beware,' isn't it? In the end I went with BHS because they had a good returns policy if I didn't like the quality, and I wouldn't have to deal with people overseas!

I'm glad you have a dress you love now.

Ah! I was planning on buying my dress online, and now I'm worried after seeing this!! I checked to see if the website I was looking at was based in China... and they all are Smiley sad

anyone know of any good websites that sell dresses that are affordable and have a good reputation?

I can't believe people are allowed to sell products that look so different to the original! Smiley sad x

i just want to add my experience.

i bought a dress online from china. sent all my measurement and it came. it is perfect, perfect fit looks fine in the photos i took and i love it.

I did not go looking for a designer rpelica...i just bought a dress i liked. have since foundout it is a maggie sottero dress.

I know it was luck (as the OP said) but i went on the fact that my friend had also bought from the same site. i just wanted to put my positive to a negative story.

Don't rule out bridal shops completely.

I went dress shopping with an idea in mind of trying on dresses and then getting a replica of the dress from China. Ended up buying a dress off the peg because it was only £250!

Wow really! thats amazing, I thought they would be a lot more expensive from Bridal stores... my only problem is that I live in a very rural location and there aren't any bridal stores locally Smiley sad

I might have to convince the girlies to come on a road trip Smiley tongue x

I haven't got my dress yet, but I did have a horrible experience with a dress I brought from Ebay. I brought a red dress for my 21st birthday party in the photos it looked beautiful, red satin bodice with a red tulle skirt, beading all over and a corset back.. When it arrived I was heartbroken. The "beads" on the skirt were actually sequins, loosely threaded on by a single red thread zigzagged down to the bottom. The beading on the bodice was all hanging off, the stitching on the bodice itself was of a zigzag formation and stretched when I put it on and what was supposed to be a UK size 16 measured in at a UK size 4! I couldn't return it back to China, so in the end I ended up givving it away on Freecycle once my Nan had tacked it together as best as she could for the party!

On the plus side though, oddlyt enough I'm off for a browse at BHS dresses tomorrow with one of my 'maids :-D

I think it just depends who you buy your dress from etc. I also think that the price may also reflect on the quality of the dress in some cases too?

I got my dress from China and it is gorgeous and as described!

I did umm and arr about it for a while before I ordered it as I thought is was a huge risk to take. I just took my chances after going through the small print very carefully. The makers/sellers were really helpful and promptly answered all my questions and queries I had and reassured me I could return the dress if I had any problems as long as the dress was not custom made

The standard measurements were exactly the same as my custom measurements and when it arrived earlier than planned it fitted perfectly and the quality in material and stitching was really good too! (MIL2B is an ex textiles teacher and part time seamstress) The detail on my dress is good and exactly like the original dress. I do, however, have to have it taken in now as I have lost weight! Its a good job it arrived early than expected so I was able to try it on in plenty of time and find I have lost weight!

Perhaps I may have beenone of the lucky ones too.

Don't forget you can also try some of these places:

    https://www.barnardos.org.uk/shop/shops/brides_by_appointment.htm

My best mate got her dress from Southampton Oxfam. It was an ex-catwalk dress and in perfect condition and was lovely.

    Monsoon have gorgeous dresses.

A bit more expensive but if you look in store there are always sales on.

Personally I would never buy from China. I reckon on average I hear of 1 in 10 having a positive result and it's too big a risk to take. I also think that you can get enough dresses here in the UK for the same price but less stress.

I haven't got any experience of buying from China or elsewhere but i just thought i'd add to the thing about being able to get cheaper dresses here in the UK - Wedding fayres often have exhibitors with ex-sample dresses for sale. That's where i got mine from and it was more than half the original price with a free veil and accessories. ?

I brought my dress off ebay but it was a private seller paid £99 as the photo was off the Trudy Lee wesbite photo I thought it may be a copy but took the risk with plenty of time to go to a bridal shop. It turns out it is a Trudy Lee orginal never worn down the asile or altered all the tags or on it including the orginal price. Although it will be altered in a couple of months when I get to wear my stunning dress. Guess I was lucky.

My dress was an ebay jobby, made in China and I love it. I paid £27 for it and everyone of my guests said it looked like a £2000 dress.

I don't have any decent pics of it yet as waiting for my pro photos.

After I had hooked it up at the back.

I was lucky. The seller was a UK seller who had brought it themselves from china but they then found one they prefered more so this one had never been worn just tried on and I got it for a bargain.
