name change with DVLA

carrotbroc, 13 August, 2015 at 10:17 Posted on Just Married 0 6

Can anyone shed some light on how long this takes?

I am a dual national and hold a foreign and british passport. I've discovered that the passport office won't change my name on my british passport until I have had it changed on my foreign one! the foreign one won't change my name without a piece of gvt issued photo id with the new name on it! I've sent away to have my driving licence changed as this is the only photo id I will have in my new name (apart from a british passport which i cant change atm)

my husband has booked our honeymoon in my married name. We have 4 months until we go but just thinking if each thing takes a month I'm up to 3 months! (licence, foreign passport, british passport)

Get onto the holiday company and find out if the red tape isn't sorted re the passport would they change the name on the holiday booking to match the existing passport. Also if this is possible (should be I used to be a travel agent) then is there a time limit for this to be done and what they charge for the amendment. For instance they may say it has to be done a month before etc.

at least you will then know you have a back up plan if you run out of time to get your British passport changed.

    Good luck. X

    Thats a good plan,

my mom pointed out that my canadian passport will def be back by then so even if theres no time to change the british passport I can always just travel on my Canadian one!

    silly me worrying for nothing

My DVLA name change took 3 weeks. I'm also a dual national and didn't realise the UK rules were like that, good to know but annoying as my US passport has about 8 years left on it! Would point out though that you may end up spending a long time with customs if you travel on your Canadian passport, as when you re-enter the country they'll ask you how long you're staying for, and the answer "I live here" will raise a few eyebrows...

It came back last Thursday and I applied for my Canadian passport last friday so im certain it will all be sortwd before we travel.
I meant I would travel abroad on my Canadian passport but enter the UK on my British one, once you get to the desk you can use which ever passport is more beneficial for you!

Im not sure if the requirement is new but I queried it when I got my current passport. There is a section that says any uncalled passports need to be sent in, they said it includes foreign ones that are still valid!

But you said if there was no time to change the British one you would travel on the Canadian, so wouldn't have a British one in your name to show? I travel to US on my American and re-enter on my British, but pretty sure your name still has to match the passenger manifesto! It's unlikely to matter tho as I'm sure you'll get your passports squared away in time.

I've never actually renewed my UK passport so it could be a longstanding requirement - I got my current one in 2008 and as it was my first "adult" passport I had to go for an interview. They didn't ask to see my US passport then, but maybe you don't have to of you're there in person? Who knows, they seem to make these things as complicated as possible!

Hm no when you get to the actual customs desk it doesn't matter. The name match is for the airline. I know a few people who have passports in different names who do that. I like you travel to north America on.my canadian one and back to the UK on my British one.

I had the interview too! Was annoying but at least dont have to do it again.
My British passport still has 9 years left on it! Told my husband I wasn't impressed he booked tickets in married name as I was planning to change passport in 10 yrs time lol.

You're best to check with the airline but as long as you take your marriage certificate with you and your passports they will let you on. My sister booked hers in her new married name and the airline at the check in desk and through customs didn't even question it. but she still had her certificate with her just in case. 9 times out of 10 they are just looking at your photo on the passport

Congratulations on getting wed. my wife and i have now been married for 62 days Smiley smile
