Photography- confused

francinesmith, 17 April, 2009 at 17:02 Posted on Just Married 0 9

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone there can share with me their experiences/comments on wedding photography. I am getting married next year and there are so many packages around- unfortunately I am on a budget and hoping to spend as little as possible. There are photographers available (£400) to professionally photograph and then I just get a cd pf the images- upto 800, then I can print them myself. Has anyone else done this? I would like some nice photo's which is why I'm opting for the professional photographer but hate paying over the odds?

Thanks Smiley winking

Hi Francine....FWIW the most important thing about the photographer is not what packages, albums or dvds they deliver, the key thing is that you like their style of photography. Have a look around and you will find that many are not as "over the odds" pricewise as you may think....

Happy hunting and welcome to hitched. You may find this worth posting in the Wedding Planning forum as this one is relatively quiet.

Iam a photographer in the North East i understand that your on a budget but please stay away from a package that only consists of a cd. There are a couple of resons for this firstly you will have nothing to hold, touch and and look at just a cd, secondly if you add the extra costs of you spending on printing and buying a album it's no cheaper just more hassle.

i my humble opinion any full time photographer would not be selling you such a thing for you big day.

Please Please re-think about this.YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE AT THIS

    hope i have helped you

    Hi,

i got married last month and opted for a photography package that gave us our pics on cd with full reproduction rights, we also have 20 large prints included with the price. the service we have recieved off our photographer was amazing, and totally non intrusive, we also had 2 photographers as his wife came along too! i am currently finishing designing a photobook of our wedding and have enjoyed being able to do this for myself. our photographer would be happy to do this for us also (for a fee) but i like the thought that we have done it!

meet up with some photographers and see what style they used tho - we opted for a laid back style and the photographer we chose suited us, we met with some other photographers whom we just didin't think felt right, so the best advice i could give is have a look about, meet some photographers and look at their work bofore you decide on price alone!

    hope that helps

    Hi Franicesmith,

I agree with you about paying over the odds! It seems as soon as you mention the word 'wedding' everything is more expensive!! I'm getting married in July this year and we have gone with a photographer who is willing to prouce a disc rather that hard copies. I am looking forward to creating an album myself after our honeymoon, otherwise i'm going to be bored with nothing to do!! There's also a free website where you can create your own wedding website and peolpe can view pics you upload and everyone can upload there's on it too. And it is free!! Go to www.gettingmarried.co.uk you can design your own page and put any info you want on it. I';ve done one for the build up of our wedding but I don't think i'll let people know about til afterwards, otherwise everyone will think i'm wedding mad!!

To be honest, no one will buy pics from a photographer's website, they're so expensive and people have their own cameras and more people will store them on their computers. Older people like grandparents & parents will want a frame pic but I know that none of my friends would want me on their mantlepeice!!

Good luck with the decisions! Smiley smile

As others have said the absolute most important thing is to find a photographer who produces good work and work that is to your taste.

If the photography is initially bad, then no matter which options you choose, you'll not be pleased with them.

Also go for quality, not quantity. 800 is a very large amount of photos, unless you have a real all day wedding, such as an Indian wedding. Any photographer shooting 800 is simply not going to be much good, just being the kind of photographer who snaps away in the hope of getting something good.

Much better to go for a professional photographer and end up with two or three hundred stunning images.

    Hi Francine,

We were on a budget too for our big day but have 3 mates all keen amateur photographers, do you have some friends like that? I don't mean anyone that's just snap happy but mates or relatives who you have seen photos taken by already that you really liked?

We asked them if they would be our photographers for the day but had a sit down with them a month before to make a list of places/people/poses that they had to get snapped for us...they even had a little drive around with us then to check out pretty places to stop after the reception for some 'Mr & Mrs quiet shots' & we agreed everything together ahead of the big day.

We were really pleased with the result, ok it took us nearly a year to go through the pics, get them printed & put into a beautiful albulm but much less stressful & must cheaper that way!

Aside from that, we borrowed a friends photo printer for our evening reception & rather than a guest book just signed by friends we had everyone with digital cameras print out their pics & stick them into the book there & then with their comments - love that one! It even has pictures some of the kids drew on the day stuck in with the photos - treasure!

All the best for whatever you decide but remember that you can get exactly what you want without spending a fortune..it just takes a little more planning & searching!

Oopps, sorry don't know what happened there ;-))

Wish I could find a photographer for £400! We're getting married next year in Brentwood, Essex and everyone I've looked at so far , ranges between £1300 to over £3k. Like you, just would like some nice photo's.

I am based moderately close to Brentwood and charge considerably less than this more my cheaper deals. Most of the cost of the wedding photography will come from the album you want.. The quality of the photography will be the same whatever the album.
