I can see why people would think it was a nice idea for family members to make the cake, but personally, I would prefer to have it made professionally. I am going to have my cake made by a shop who has made every single cake I have had since I was christened. Her cakes are fantastic and I know she won't let me down x

We're spending quite a bit on the venue so to cut costs we've decided not to go down the professional cake route. Instead my mum is going to make a layer, H2b's mum is gonna make a layer & we're gonna make a layer together. My mum used to make all our birthday cakes when we were kids & she's made quite a few trials of different flavours then we're gonna use her recipe. I like the personal touch with great tasting cakes. It also means I have complete control over decorating them (which I need to practice) to have them exactly as I want.

So main reasons are a personal touch & cost

My mother-in-law made my cake, honestly, which meant we didn't have to pay for it. To be honest, I think the whole 'cutting the cake' thing a bit outdated and didn't really want to do it, I bowed to family pressure and pressure from my husband on that one. (although, being gluten free it's probably no surprise that cake doesn't rate highly for me). If I'd had to pay for one, I think that I would have used this as one area to save costs and cut back, I just don't think I could have justified spending £100 upwards. In fairness to my mother-in-law, she did do a lovely cake...
