Who to tell about change of name?

before40, 18 October, 2012 at 15:19 Posted on Just Married 0 6

Am thinking ahead a little bit here but has anyone got a really comprehensive list of who to tell when you've changed your name?

I'm thinking so far bank, doctors, employer, dentist, utilities and then after that get stuck! I probably won't do my passport immediately as only just got a new one that's valid for another 9 years and I know you can travel under different names as long as passport name is on travel documents, we're not having a honeymoon or anything just yet anyway.

    • Local Authority (Council tax and register of electors)
    • Department of Work and Pensions (if you are entitled to any benefits)
    • Police (if you have any criminal actions against you or are on the Sex Offenders' Registry)
    • HM Land Registry (if you own land or property)
    • Pension providers
    • Passport Office (apply for a name passport)
    • DVLA (apply for a new drivers license)
    • Motoring organisations (breakdown organisations)
    • Utility services (ie. Gas, electricity, water and sewerage providers)
    • Telephone provider
    • Internet provider
    • Mobile phone provider

Thank you for this Fawny, 6 days after the event, I now need to crack on with this tedious-ness! Will do the thank you cards first though.

One to add for anyone with children, as we were advised:

You have to re-register their births https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-re-register-a-childs-birth-following-marriage-of-natural-parents

No Problem. Still working through the list, it seems to be taking forever to change everything, fingers crossed by Christmas everything will be done.

I'm in the process of sorting all this out (couldn't face it in the build up to the wedding and the honeymoon was straight afterwards!). Just spoke to the Passport Office.... My passport expires in 2019 and if I want to change my name on the passport, I get to pay in full for a new one and I'll get a maximum of 9 months carried over. I don't really fancy spending that money so the advice on the helpline was to keep it in my maiden name until it expires. I'm a bit shocked that the advice is to have one bit of ID that says one name with everything else saying a different name.... Surely that will look dodgy as hell (and be a real pain if I ever need to prove my ID with multiple bits of proof!)? I'm a bit surprised that it's free for a drivers license and the passport office are so awkward.

    Anyway, just wanted a rant!!
