Why do so many women change their name?

Hi there,

I got married a couple of months ago and am enjoying the new level of commitment that marriage signifies.

Some people seem a bit bemused when I tell them that I have not changed my surname. In fact, it has never crossed my mind to do so. My opinion is that it is an archaic and sexist custom.

It may seem trivial but our names form a fundamental part of our identity.

I know that women can choose whether to keep their name or not, but since the changing of men's names is hardly ever up for discussion, the choice is somewhat limited.

That's just my opinion and I would be interested in discussing this issue with those of you who have decided to change or not.

All the best,

Leah

I'm going to take my h2b's name as we are starting a new unit together and i'm a traditionalist. I will probably still refer to myself with my existing name apart from legal documents etc.

i mentioned to my Dad about keeping my own name and he was aghast and said I had to take h2b's. Lol!

    Hey,

I have thought about this topic as well and I am unsure. I want a traditional wedding on one hand, but on the other, I do not want to lose my name, because it is really rare. My husband (to be) said that he would not mind and take my name as well, but I still don't know, if I actually want that :/

    Best, Cindy

I have just found this post and found it really interesting. I am really going to miss my name, but I have always known that I would take my husband's name. My hubby to be has a long surname that people tend to spell incorrectly, so that will be frustrating! I must confess I hate double barrelled surnames, but ours wouldn't work anyway. I want to take his name as I just love the idea of both having the same name, and I would want any future kiddies to have the same name as both of us. I have family who have different names to one another and it gets so confusing!

So nobody else's H2B taking (or took) their surname? Cos that's what we're doing.

We seriously considered it. He even asked my Dad permission to take his name as well as his daughter. He doesn't want his children to carry on his family name, so he was really keen for me to keep my name and the children to take my name if we have any.

Sadly his Father was really upset with the idea, so my OH will keep his own name initially. We will review the decision when/if we have kids and possibly again when his father passes.

Yeah, my H2B hasn't seen his dad since he was five, so thankfully that's not been an issue!

Our little girl was born before we were married and this was a Big Thing. In the end, we decided she would have [her names] [his surname] [my surname], which ends up being shortened to [her first name] [my surname]

I haven't changed mine; I wanted us *all* to change, or none of us. He doesn't see why he has to give up his name, and I don't see why I have to either - so we are me [my surname] him [his surname] sprog [his then my surname]. we didn't double barrel either

My friend did this - she has an AWESOME surname. So he took it!
One of our probs with this, is that him-indoors has the same first name as my brother, so taking mine's not an option

I wanted to find an old family name from either side and change to that; our little girl's first/second names are from our family tree, as will be any other tiddlywinks that come along, so it seemed to make sense to me to try that.

    He didn't buy it.

The worst thing for me is that I will now have EXACTLY the same name as H2B's sister. First name, middle name and surname! But his dad would be so gutted if he gave up his surname

I agree with you that it is a sexist tradition which has been prevalent for a long time. Also I really can't understand why there is so much of importance given to such a pity issue as if the name holder is going to change. Being a man, I don't agree of this tradition.
