14 year old tongue piercing

monkey fingers, 31 July, 2009 at 22:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

My 14 year old neice has just had her tongue pierced, she is sure to tell me her mum went with her. Would someone still pierce the tongue of someone so young even with parental permission?

Her mum probably didn't go with her, but would more than likely have allowed it anyway.

Please don't think I am having ago at anyone with a tongue piercing, I am really not, this is just a small part of a big situation

Thank you in advance x

For some reason I thought it might be a legal limit of 16?? It may be that with parental consent they can do piercings younger but i'm pretty sure the tattoo/piercing place that my bil goes to for his tattoos has a policy that they will do nothing on anyone under the age of 18.

I guess it's up to the individual and i've certainly got no issues with anyone who decides to have a piercing or a tattoo but at the age of 14 i'm not sure it's really that wise.

Also it's lovely to see you back Monkey Fingers, hope all going well with you ?

I found out last week from a tattoo artist - who is also does piercings - that there are no regulations over piercings. You could take a baby in and ask for a tongue / ear / nose / eye brow etc. piercing and no rules or laws are broken if they are carried out. However, this uy doesn't do it until 16/18, dependning on the piercing.

Piercing and tatooing is something that fascinates me and if I could get a garuntee (sp) that I could specialise in only that I would definitely study to be an EHO. Technically its mutilation, and potentially GBH if a scar is left. A decent piercer will require a signed disclaimer prior to the piercing procedure. I'm sure only ears are legal before 18, definitely before 16. You could speak to the local EH dept., and say that you suspect that x is piercing under-age without parental consent, but it is very difficult to prove I'm afraid!

Thank you all, and thank you Dooby, i have been lurking a fair bit, but it's not been easy to concentrate enough to post.

i really appreciate you all replying, I think she is too young, but I am not her mum.

I think the place that did it would have either thought she was older than 16 or she had consent.

    Thank you again x

I had my belly button pierced at 14 with my mum present, and my nipple pierced at 15, obviously without my mum present! I don't think I was asked my age on either occasion.

    Thank you Mousie,

Part of my issue is that she doesn't have the best personal hygiene, she has just had her belly button pierced and now her tongue, i am sure without proper care there is risk of infection, i just wish I could take care of her.

I'd also respect her decision to these things if I thought she was doing it because she wanted them and not because the people she has started to surround herself with them has them.

I got my tongue pierced 9 years ago when I was 17 - I went with a couple of friends after school - in my uniform! The piercing shop is quite renowned round here so the legal age must have been 16 - then they never asked me for any id?? ?

I took it out a few years ago and its all healed up!

Surprisingly there is no legal age limit. i would have thought it was sixteen at least, without parental consent

it does sound like she's acting up in your case. but i guess it's not the worse thing she could have done...at least it can be taken out

does she look older than her age?

I had my belly pierced when I was 13 (grim I know) They said I had to be 18 but would do it with parental consent. They phonedmy dad and asked. My poor dad though it was a practical joke and was mortified when I came home with it done. ooops!

Yep, no age limit for piercings escept genital piercings where the age limit is 16. But most reputable places won't pierce under the age of 16 - my tattooist wouldn't go any younger for piercings, even with parental permission.

Just encourage your niece to keep using an antibacterial mouthwash, and if there are any problems, go back to the piercer (or another one, any good one will help you out) so it can be taken out. Hope she's ok. She'll probably hate it this time next year

    Thank you all!

Yes she looks much older than her age- sadly when we got married she was 12 years old, we went out for a meal as a 'hen do' for me, and when she went to the loo, she was ages, I went to see where she was and there she was being chatted up by a group of men in their late 20 at least (she'd gone to bar area via the toilet), they were horrified when I told them her age!

Her mum's fb status today is " All parents should get their childrens tongues pierced, it keeps the house quiet and stop them eating all the food"

The only people I come across (and forgive the pun) who maintain their tongue piercings are lap dancers. Not a great fan and totally inappropriate for someone of that age.

BGB, I find it inappropiate too. Mind you, apparently I know nothing as she and her mum feel it totally appropiate that she sleeps in bed with her boyfriend every night, I need to stop being so sad as everyone does it!

Her mum sometimes makes them keep the door open, so that's ok isn't it? (oh and my neice gets through boyfriends quite quickly, so it's not the same long term boyfriend, if that makes any difference)

Oh and it is also appropiate for her to have had 90 days off school this last year, her mum authorised over 40 of them, and understands why she didn't go in on the other days!

Sorry, shouldn't be posting all of this on here, just feel so angry, frustrated and saddened.

WSS - my tatooist wouldn't even pierce a 15-year-old girl's ears while I was there despite her being with her mum.
