I've got to make a retro pudding of some sort on Wednesday for a v. silly dinner party (I suspect the other offerings will include prawn cocktail and steak diane ?) and I need a spectacular finishing touch. Black forest gateau? Baked alaska? Neither are really inspiring me. Any other ideas...

No real restrictions, there are some fussy buggers coming but they know where the chippy is or can bring sandwiches.

Wah, this thread has made me choke on my coffee ? Especially Hickory's squirrel grandad ?

I was born in the early 80's so suffered the culinary delights of the 70's...my young mum was a very experimental cook, so we often had gammon with pineapple (I do not heart gammon)...we still have:

    Pavlova

    Creme caramel

Prawn cocktail (although 'poshed up' with crab and avocado)

    And cheesecake!

Thanks for cheering up my PMT-ed self this afternoon x

MIL is in a 70s time warp as well. She has the mindset that seemed to start then that if you had company the food had to be "special" so we get prawns and avacado pears (have never heard anyone else refer to them as pears) with shop bought rose marie sauce, or BIL (master chef wannabe but actually truly awful cook) whips up some mayonnaise, tomato ketchup and worcester sauce for a homemade one. also get steak diane, brandy chocolate moouse and so on.

Actually, whilst we're talking about this- I am generally a believer that you cover meat in sauce to disguse an inferior peice of meat. Is that not right? only, they won't eat meat without a sauce on it, and I'm sick of them making me make up sauces for my beautiful joints I've gone out of my way to buy.
