2 closest friends got recently engaged and planned their weddings before mine

Midnight, 1 June, 2023 at 07:14 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 2

My fiance and i got engaged Easter last year and have scheduled our wedding for 2024; seeing as my side of the family doesn't come from a lot of money and the wedding is cross country for them.

Here fairly recently, 2 of my closest friend have gotten engaged and both planned theirs to almost a month or 2 before mine. one of them (C) being a standing bridesmaid in my own wedding. That same one's (C's) sister(who is also a BM) said that they didn't know if they would be able to make my wedding because (C's) is before mine.

So now I'm down 2 bridesmaids potentially and in the event they do show up i know C will only compare my big day with hers and be snobbish about it.

What should i do? Should i tell them ive already found replacements for them or should i still let C and her sister be my maids?

You need to ask those two bridesmaids whether C's wedding changes the commitment they can make to you. It would be better for your friendship if they admitted that now rather than closer to the time.

A wedding a month before may limit any bridesmaid help you need from them in the run up. However if you just need them on the day itself then I don't see how C's wedding would be a problem.

Unless the reason C's sister is concerned is related to finances or annual leave. It's unfortunate for you but I can understand her prioritising her sister's wedding if she can only afford one.

The separate issue is C being snobbish about your wedding. If that's the case then it doesn't sound like she is a very good friend so I would question her role as bridesmaid anyway.

The only reason for either of them to be unable to attend your wedding is if they either could not afford it or could not get any more annual leave. So in most situations, I'd be suggesting talking to these girls to find out what the problem is and seeing if we could work round it (cheaper hen do, wear their own dresses instead of buying new ones, skip the dress rehearsal the night before etc)

    BUT...

"i know C will only compare my big day with hers and be snobbish about it."

Why on earth is this girl your bridesmaid in the first place?!!! Seriously, if this person is one of your 'closest friends' I think you need to take a long hard look at your friendship circle and look at making some new friends. So in view of her behaviour, I would just say 'I'm sorry you can't commit to being bridesmaid, but I understand why. I'll ask someone else instead.'
