50th Birthday party - H's boss's wife - still with me? What to wear help!

tahiti, 20 May, 2009 at 10:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

H has just started a new job, he is FD, and has been invited to the boss's wife's 50th birthday party. It's at their house, what do I wear? They work in sportswear/fashion design so am going to look like the mum who has been in jeans for too long...

Am bricking it, have a budget of up to £100 for a dress, as I only just found out about it and I have no money this month!

Can anyone help me?!

Oh, I'm average height, size 8 top, 10 bottom, no boobs, large arse!

Thanks!

Is it a formal dinner party, or drinks and nibbles? Has your H been given a dress code at all?

From experience I'd say possibly wear a nice pair of trousers and top with killer heels and accessories. Glam yet not OTT.

Have no idea what sort of party, H is useless at getting helpful info for me! I would guess at drinks and nibbles though, and H's answer to dress code was 'what you'd wear to an evening wedding reception'. That works for a man, but I don't want to be over- or equally underdressed...

Urgh, my H is just the same, thankfully when I organise functions for work I make it clear to the men what dress code is for their partners.

As I said from experience, the partners of our FD and other senior directors usually wear smart trousers and killer heels with fabulous jewellery, or a dress from somewhere like Browns or Net a Porter, places I can only dream of shopping.

You could try Reiss, Whistles, Karen Millen, or Coast to get an idea of stuff you like then link it here. Will your H be wearing a lounge suit?

Ah, forgot to mention, it's not a massive company, not in London either (deepest Suffolk), so the rules may be different? The office is pretty casual, men wear shirt and jeans, smart shoes, but have never met anyone to know what the women wear.

Gah, was thinking maybe a dress from Coast or the like, nothing too flashy, but I'm conscious of being the only stay at home mother there and looking like it!

We have a KM nearby, may have to ditch the kids and pay them a visit.

Thanks, looks like I'm thinking along the right lines. H will be suited, so he is easily sorted.

Now need to think of a gift...a whole new problem!
