I fractured my 5th metatarsal in my left foot 5 weeks ago. I went to the hospital, had an xray and ended up in plaster and on crutches.
I went back yesterday for a check up and they removed the cast and gave me an xray. I was really surprised to see that I still have a fracture as my consultant kept telling me that I was healed. The fracture was originally, say 3 inches long. Now the bone has started to graft together and the fracture is maybe 2.5 inches long, but it is still an open fracture.
The doctor told me I dont need a cast anymore, dont need physio and am to get around as best I can with my crutches and should the pain stay the same or get worse, to go back. And that was it! If it gets worse or doesnt improve any more from where I am today, then he said I will need surgery, but "dont worry, we can do that later and just reopen the bones if needed"!!!!
Anyone else fractured their 5th and if so what was the prognosis and what happened. I guess I am sceptical on the diagnosis and the lack of follow up care and am wondering if I should get a second opinion. In my head today, the pain is about 7/10.....when I fractured it the pain was probably around 15/10 so its an improvement, but it definitely isnt better.
I asked about physio and he just looked blankly. Should I be exercising or not? I have no idea. Although its sore, if exercise such as swimming, would help, then I would happily do it.
I guess my real question is what happened to you if you fractured your 5th as I am not confident I have had the right follow up diagnosis. Should I be insisting on getting it pinned now and thereby, hopefully, in the long run, minimise my overall recovery time? I had confidence in my doctor until yesterday......
Any advice gratefully received.
