A Cotswolds Barn Wedding Venue Help

Whippet, 30 October, 2013 at 22:21 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi all

Im new to the forum. My girlfriend and I got engaged a week ago and although we are really excited about organising our wedding (summer next year) we are

realising just how expensive the whole day can become! I am originally from the cotswolds and would quite like to get married there.

Ideally we would like to hire a farmers barn and decorate it completely ourselves and organise our own hog roast food. We don't really want a dedicated wedding venue barn as

it seems that they can charge ridiculous prices, we have a budget of around 8K.. Has anyone ever hired a farm barn and if so how did you go about doing it?

Thanks all.!

Baba

    Hi there,

we went for stone barn in Gloucestershire - I fell in love with the venue after seeing a couple of other barns. Unfortunately barns in the Cotswolds seem to have a high price tag . Your best bet , I would say is to go see them. We found if the venue is happy for you to scrap 'a package' Costs come down xxx all the best of luck x

    Thanks Slou,

Good advice about scrapping the package offers.! Thats why we want to do it all ourselves in a bog standard barn. Im hoping to ask my parents this weekend if they know any farmers who will give us one cheap. Need some set up time before & after as well.

The stone barn is one ive looked at though, its a lovely venue I'm sure your wedding looked great.

Oh is it ... I wasn't sure on it and then when we walked in we just looked at each other and where like 'this'... We don't get married till April ( however I see my rubbish typing skills made it look like we have been married already Smiley winking )

i want to blame this codeine but really I just can't type very well on my iphone and I'm too impatient to proof read.

are you looking for the whole day there or just the reception ?

Have you tried cogges in Witney, Oxfordshire - we didn't go to see it but iv heard good things x

Cogges does look amazing. Thing is it says it would only would have exclusive access once the public leave at 5pm and the licence is only till 11pm,. We are open to having the ceremony at the same place as the reception.

Oh I wasn't aware of the timings ... So are you needing to find a venue with a liscence to wed or are you going to rush off after and legalise it ? I only ask because this may cause problems in a farmers barn . Although I totally see the look you are going for !!!

Erm I'm trying to think of some others that aren't too pricey ... If I come up with any suggestions I'll be sure to let you know x

Oh one thing you could consider - and it may not be at all what your looking for is a 'riverside wedding' - Google Cotswold riverside wedding and you'll see what I mean a may be food if your looking for something to take in the countryside and do the diy part. Hire a marquee - or a massive tipi thing ? Make sure you let us know though won't you x

Are you all set for your wedding then?

You'll find it tricky to use a farmers barn and have a legal ceremony there as they need to be licensed. However if you are happy to do the legal bit elsewhere (and possibly on another day) you can have a blessing wherever you want!

We've booked a farm in North Somerset, just south of Bath, (so may be not good for you) and are having the wedding in a nearby town hall. We found wedding barn venues in Somerset and Gloucestershire were just too far out of our price range, so just did a lot of internet research!

    Thanks Laura.

We're kind of working backwards in that we want to find a nice reception spot first then work out where is nearby and available to do the licensed ceremony. How did you get hold of the farm? I can't seem to find any barns that aren't dedicated venues on the web. Have you got a lot of decorating and prep work to do?

    Kingscote Barn is lovely:

    Have a look here

    Or there's Cripps Barn:

    Which is here

Both are fab and both have their own uniqueness. Kingscote has accommodation though.

    Hi Baba,

We knew the farm already as they have a shop in Bristol and hold spring and autumn fairs at the farm. They have a website, which said they do hire out the site for events, so we just emailed them. Luckily they are branching out into wedding receptions more now, and their website now promotes this too. It's a very rustic site though (it has outdoor compost loos) and is a total blank canvas, so we are doing all the decorating ourselves.
I would suggest asking in local farm shops, or check out sites which hold local fairs/fêtes festivals.
We also looked into a few village halls as they are really cheap and can be really pretty. they have a lot more flexibility on catering and alcohol (often you can bring your own or they run a bar for you quite cheaply).
We were also considering youth hostels and bunk barns too. You could also look at smaller farm-run campsites as you may be able to hire the site exclusively for a weekend, and hire a marquee.
    Good luck in your search.
