A question about fresh flowers in hair ....

diamondsragirlsbestfriend!, 25 March, 2009 at 09:05 Posted on Planning 0 8

Am thinking about getting a fresh flower put on to a comb as the fascinator for my birdcage veil, maybe an orchid or a rose.

Can anyone tell me how well they last. Do they wilt quickly or are they likely to last into the evening? ?

Also a bit worried about handling - my hair is very thick and it takes a bit of effort to get a comb into it, also the comb will probably be moved and re-positioned a few times as I will probably take the veil part off during the reception. Will fresh flowers survive this?

Just one more silly Q - are metal combs better than the plastic ones as I'm not convinced the plastic one is going to stay in my hair!

Thanks ?

I'm probably not he one to comment on the flowers lasting, but from a hairdressers point of view they can be difficult to work with.

have you asked your hairdresser what he/she thinks or are you doing hair yourself .

In my experience with flowers i've had to put in hair , they are beautiful ,but sometimes not practical. sometimes the combination of comb and flower can be heavy .

you can get some beautiful sik or artificial flowers which are ligher and more workable , i'm sure your florist can advise you.

Most flowers have to be wired and if they are in the wrong postion and constantly moved they can fall apart . could you ask your florist to do you one to see if your will like and also so you can practice with it. I know this would push costs up but at least you would know if it would work.

sorry if I've offended the florist hibs , but some brides order flowers for hair and they are not what they expected (or me , good job I can improvise). although I think sometimes its a bit of lack of communication .

metal or plastic combs... hadn't really thought about it, but I suppose metal are a bit more flexible than plastic and would take a heavier decoration, and you wouldn't get a plastic comb on a tiara, but some veils have plastic and some metal.

    hope that helps

Thanks for all the info Sharonhair. I am considering the silk route too and maybe that might be the better option after all. In terms of the comb, the lady making the bridcage veil sent me some samples to try on and all the combs were plastic - they just seem to fall out of my hair, thats why I was wondering if metal may be stronger and stay in better.

Thank you very much for your advice, thats really helpful.

If you have really thick hair then I would use a metal comb rather than plastic as they tend to break easily . I agree with Sharon re the flowers, if they are to be handled a lot during the day as well they will bruise & not last until the evening.

If you wanted Fresh for the day then have silk for the evening.

If you still got the sample , try taking a section of hair about 1'' thick and make a 'pin curl' flat to the head where you want it to sit and then criss cross with grips ..

then slide the comb under this 'pin curl' it should now be quite stable.

If you don't know what i mean I'll do it on a client today and post a pic later!

    might do that anyway,

Had a great laugh today , i arrived at a clients house to colour her hair.

    here is our conversation:

me: ''before I start can i do a quick pin curl on your hair and take a picture of it for a bride to be?''

client: ''you won't get too close so she can see my grey roots though?''

me:'' but i won't show your face but it highly unlikely she would know you anyway''

client : I'm a bit funny who I let see my roots''

I took pics and then we had hysterics cos i didn't have one of the plastic combs that come with the facinators , so i improvised with my cutting comb!

    here are the pics:

hope that helps the earlier explanation.

shouldn't be a problem with your length hair and you could also put a grip through the comb too.

let me know how you get on.
