A WWYD about changing the spare bed, sorry boring question!

Gryfon, 30 July, 2008 at 10:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 57

We've finally got a big spare bed and I don't want to leave it with no bedcovers on because it's a double bed and it would just look messy. Anyway we had someone to stay for a week, do I leave the bedclothes on and just change them before someone needs it again, or do I change them now and then if I did that would I need to change them before someone visited anyway?

Sorry, I know it's a bizarre question but I'm not sure what people do! Usually we just stripped the single bed and left it bare with stuff stuck on it. ? ?

We leave bedding on after a guest and if we have new guests booked in we'll change it.

I strip ours after use, and make it back up when people are coming. I just leave the duvet pulled up flat in between

Thanks ? I'm tempted to leave it on because of the children playing on it, but I have a headache and can't think for myself today! I feel so grown up with a double spare bed ?

But what if you don't have another guest staying for ages? The clean sheets will go dusty, no?

Does someone staying 1 night in a bed necessarily make sheets dirtry though? That's my thinking.

We strip the bed, wash the bedding and put clean bedding on straight away, dont have to think about it then when someone else stays over, its already done!

    umm, yes

Seriously, if my mate came to stay for 1 night, I wouldn't then not wash the sheets for my mother coming a week later. That mings!

How would you feel about staying in a hotel bed where the previous occupant had only stayed one night, so they didn't change them. Urgh!

Well, not unless they had been shagging all night - but I wouldn't want to stay in someones spare bed knowing the sheets weren't clean.

Unless you hoover the bed everyday surely every house produces dust?

If they'd only stayed one night I wouldn't change it (I know!)

If they'd stayed a few days/week I'd change it and then make it up with clean stuff. It didn't matter if no-one else stayed for a while I'd rather it was made up and it never got dusty or dirty in between people staying.

Used sheets get taken off once the guests have left.

I put pillows with no covers on and the duvet on the bed and the bed gets covered by a fab handmade patchwork quilt.

I don't like the thought of bedding being unused on a bed for ages - gets a bit dusty

As I said in my first post though, I change the sheets before every new guest, but don't remove the old sheets until new guests are coming.

    I thank you!

Seriously this is going to turn into a 20-pager bedding gate isn't it ?

Ah a patchwork quilt, that sounds nice...actually I think I might have something that will do!

Thanks everyone ? Mr G did suggest afterwards that I should leave the old sheets on and then just hoover it when the next person arrives [Smiley sexy ?

We strip it straight away, bedlinen in the wash, and re-make it. i have never considered beds getting 'dusty'.

I do change the sheets - just not straight away - waste of washing. They can sit there and gather any dust that might be around.

I don't have a cover to put over the bed, so I leave the old sheets on until we have new guests coming so that we avoid:

    a) putting clean sheets on straight away that might sit there for months gathering dust

    b) an uncovered duvet & pillows sitting there for a while potentially gathering dust

Once I know we have guests coming the bedding gets changed accordingly. Plus, the most regular guests are my sister and my mum anyway.

Hardly rocket science. It's no different to changing the sheets immediately - except the clean sheets could be out for ages - and my husband uses the spare bed as a dumping ground for his clean washing & ironing before it gets put away - so it is sensible not to change sheets until necessary.

I strip it and remake it - but mr j is generally kicked out for snoring before the next load of people stay so i generally have to do it again anyway

bleurggh to letting people stay in a pre-slept in bed - absolutely grim

Ahhh - i live for the day when we have a spare room with a bed in it, rather than a sofa bed in the study, then this dilemma will be something I can understand. IYHASBYWU?

Excitingly, we either strip the bed immediatley the guests leave, and it stays stripped until new guests are coming. Or, we leave the used bedclothes festering and change them just before new guests come along. Depends how organised we are

We strip ours after we have had visitors and leave the pillow and duvet folded up on the bed. Then remake it when we have guests, we do have a gorgeousbedspread but the cat would trash it if it was on the bed all the time.

I really hate the thought of sleeping in a bed that doesn't have clean sheets. I don't think my mother in law changes the sheets on the spare bed every time we go down... I have started getting round this by helpfully stripping the bed when we leave so that she has to.

We have the same (but it is a futon) situation. The cover, sheet and pillowcases are stripped off and washed and then put in the vac bag with the duvet and pillows and stored underneath the futon...

You might be the only one ?

I stayed over unexpectedly at a friend's house once and when it got to bedtime she said a male friend of hers had slept in my bed only once and did I really want her to change the sheets at this time of night. I said oh, ok then don't worry, not wanting to be rude. I could smell a faint smell of sweat and BO all night. Gross, gross, gross.
