We've finally got a big spare bed and I don't want to leave it with no bedcovers on because it's a double bed and it would just look messy. We've finally got a big spare bed and I don't want to leave it with no bedcovers on because it's a double bed and it would just look messy. Anyway we had someone to stay for a week, do I leave the bedclothes on and just change them before someone needs it again, or do I change them now and then if I did that would I need to change them before someone visited anyway?

Sorry, I know it's a bizarre question but I'm not sure what people do! Usually we just stripped the single bed and left it bare with stuff stuck on it. ? ?

You might be the only one ?

I stayed over unexpectedly at a friend's house once and when it got to bedtime she said a male friend of hers had slept in my bed only once and did I really want her to change the sheets at this time of night. I said oh, ok then don't worry, not wanting to be rude. I could smell a faint smell of sweat and BO all night. Gross, gross, gross.

I change ours just before the next guest comes to stay, so they have fresh smelling sheets.

Once stayed at MIL's house, and could smell the odour of my BIL, and his then GF who had stayed about 3 weeks previous to us.

Magicool - I would want/expect fresh clean sheets and pillowcases everytime. If I knew someone had used it before me I'd want it changed. Do you know how much the average person sweats in bed at night?! ?

I normally make up clean sheets for the bed straight after otherwise I'll forget and then probably end up wondering if they are clean or not. Actually I leave duvets uncovered with a bedspread too - doesn't take much time to make the bed up then.

TBH, I'm not to concerned when sleeping at a friends/my parents house. I think its a case of ignorance is bliss. ?

When we had a spare room, I always stripped after the guests had gone, and left the beds bare. I'm really not bothered about it looking nice, apart from when anyone is coming. I always give new houseguests clean sheets though.

My mum always waits a few hours before stripping the bed, "just in case they come back" I don't think anyone is yet to do this, but I do it now as well.

I can't stand the thought of leaving dirty sheets on the bed so strip it straight away and re make (dust doesn't bother me as much as BO/stray hairs etc).

Plus, I often have guest stay unexpectedly (after nights in/out with too much wine.. in a 'oh just crash at mine' kind of way) and I wouldn't want to have to make the bed at 3 in the morning after a shed load of alcohol, so if it's already done I don't have to worry.

Having said that, now that I have lodgers I don't actually have any spare beds anymore, but that is what I used to do...

well done ? now if you could apply the same strength of will to your sandwich purchasing your life would be a lot easier

must say i was also suckered into a sensible response - we are all being terribly nice and helpful today

eta - i hope there will be an update - after all this input i think we need to know the final outcome

I applied the strength of will to limit my purchase to a 6" rather than ft long Sub. I think I did remarkably well...

Now where is that bird who washes her towels? Surely she bleaches her entire spare bedroom when people have stayed over...

This happened to me last month ?. I had dropped my parents at the airport and a couple of hours later got a call to say their flight had been delayed, so they wouldn't be able to make their connection, and could they come back and stay another night before flying out first thing in the morning!

I hadn't got around to stripping the bed at this point, so the 'just in case' rule can sometimes apply!

Ah yes, the joy of wiping your face with someone else's slug trail/ass pubes

Now there's a thought - am I the only one who travels with her own towels??

You know - if you had guest beds to be like that Hitcher who had guest towels that weren't to be used you'd never have a problem!

I travel with my own towels too, regardless of where I go!

I'd change the sheets after the guest had left and make it up with fresh sheets at the same time. If it hadn't been used in ages I'd probably change them again should someone stay. I never have anyone to stay though, apart from my nephew!

Yes. Am I a freak? I don't do it when we're going to hotels, just the kids towels.

My MIL (cleaning freak) house is ALWAYS immaculate. This one time we were staying over though, she said "i haven't changed the bedding in the spare room, Dad was in there this week, but he's not a dirty man"

I travel with my own towels!! ?

I take all the sheets off and in the wash after anyone has stayed and put the pillows/duvet away. I cover the matress with a thick throw and cushions and re-make the bed the next time someone stays. I have to do this as when noone stays the spare bed is where the cat sleeps (ontop of another throw and in a basket) but to leave it would just ming.

I also have seperate towels for guests which get washed every time. I travel with my own towel - just a small bath towel but some of the ones you get on holiday - especially ibiza can walk around on their own. The only time I haven' was Mexico and to a cottage we stayed in when I forgot, they didn't provide towels and it was the middle of nowhere. We had to use a teatowl (the only one) and drip dry.?

Now that I have figured out how to post again...

I strip the bed as soon as the guests have gone and shove it in the wash. I then leave the bed without sheets etc and make it up the night before guests arrive. The sofa bed in the other spare room is less of a problem obv. We have guest towels that are washed after each visit too.

Whenever I stay at someone's house, I always strip the bed for them as I thought it saved them a job. ?

I usually just leave the used bedding on there until we have another guest, then I whip it off, wash it and put it back on again!

I always put clean sheets on for anyone who I think would really notice/mind, but I have to confess to having left pre-used bedding (only used for 1 or 2 nights) on on a couple of occasions when our teenaged babysitters have stayed over, and once for my brother (well, he's slept in a pile of his own vomit on a Benidorm hotel balcony before now, so slightly used sheets should be luxury!) Oh and on a couple of occasions for very drunk friends who have unexpectedly stayed the night - I did warn them before allowing them to sleep in there though!

I've definitely got fussier as I've got older, now I wouldn't dream of sleeping in a pre-loved bed but when I was 19-20 ish we all used to crash over at a mate's house and I don't think he changed the sheets once, let alone wash the sleeping bags ?

Guests (on the v. rare occaision we have them) are treated to clean sheets fresh on as the spare bed is usually dismantled due to space issues. Mattress in the house and the frame in the garage. It's such a faff we only have overnight guests about twice a year ?

Oh and keef I got your towelgate allusions <snort>
