Abroad vs uk

Laura, 11 January, 2023 at 07:01 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 5
Hello, we are looking to get married in august this year. We are getting quotes for both UK and abroad weddings in Greece but can’t decide.
My hubby have always said we would want to get married abroad and Greece seems like the perfect option with it being pretty close and cheaper than other European countries.
We are on a limited budget and would hope for 40 people in Greece. What has everyone else paid for an Greece wedding including all the extras?
We’ve had a great quote from a uk venue for 9.2k all in for 70 people (food/wine/venue) which seems pretty good. But I would rather reduce the number of attendees in favour of a smaller wedding abroad. (Price dependent)
Is that a good price? Should we go with that rather than Greece? Thanks!

If you haven’t already considers this as part of the abroad vs UK decision, have you thought about if your guests can afford to travel abroad and if they have the time? They will most likely need to travel abroad the day before the wedding and then travel home the day after. Then there is accommodations for those nights and the cost of flights. Some may want to make a holiday of it though! However, if some of your guests can’t make it to your wedding abroad would that upset you? If the answers yes I would suggest a UK wedding. Xx

I think Ellen91 has hit the nail on the head with this decision - Greece will be expensive for your guests and some guests will love it and make a holiday out of it while other guests will deem it too expensive or be unable to attend due to annual leave restrictions. Would you still choose Greece if it meant that some of your top choice guests wouldn't be able to make it? Have you broached the idea of Greece with those that you anticipate asking to be in your wedding party and immediate family - do they seem up for it/excited about travelling there to celebrate with you? Also for Greece definitely factor in other halves to your numbers as it's it's pretty unlikely people will be keen to use their holiday days/budget on this if their OH isn't invited.

Personally, I love an affordable abroad wedding and would be super keen if one of my close friends decided to get married in Greece! However, if it was a less close friend I'd debate a little more as it would eat into holiday holiday budget for me and FH.

Agree on the cost to your guests, you also need to bear in mind August is peak season so accommodation/flights for guess wont be cheap and potentially wont be available for this summer or be at a premium cost. Also, you are not giving people a lot of time to save and is likely most people may have booked their summer holiday already so you could end up with guests unable to attend, which if it is key people, how would that effect your plan? Whilst looking at the Greek option I would make sure you look at what accommodation/hotels that are available near by and the logistics of travelling to the venue/hotels etc as this will be another cost for your guests, you could book your venue and have guests willing to go but if there is no accommodation then you will be pretty stuffed. i would also put the feelers out to your guests to see if they would be able to come before you do anything. There is a lot to research and decide before you commit to a wedding abroad as there are a lot of logistical challenges you need to consider. If you are really set on a wedding abroad I would say you need to push out to next year to allow you and your guests time to save and book.

The price you have for the UK is very good if that includes your meal and evening buffet, DJ etc. Could you possibly negotiate it to 50 and see what cost would be? Or Look at another venue. we had an all in package for 50 day guests which included arrival cocktail, 2 glasses of wine each, toasting fizz, 3 course meal, coffee, mints and buffet for 100 evening guests, DJ, dance floor, wedding coordinator and on the day contact and was £5600 all in, this was at a Hilton. Admittedly we had our ceremony elsewhere, but this was way cheaper

Good luck and hope you can reach a conclusion, but please take your time to really weigh it all up and ensure you get the day you want

Thanks for the advise all! We’ve floated the idea out there with core friends and family and all seem on board- I guess we need to get conformation on if they can actually do abroad or not.
