Advice needed - Wedding Insurance/Redundancy - UPDATED

The Sock Chicken, 5 January, 2009 at 17:57 Posted on Planning 0 19

I know every insurance is different but does anyone know how much is generally covered if the wedding is cancelled due to being made redundant?

H2B saw some very good friends lose their jobs today in what was probably the most stressful and emotional work day he has ever had. Luckily he has kept his. THere is the worry that they could get rid of more people in a few months but we will just have to deal with that if and when it happens. For now we are just going to keep on saving and carry on pretty much as normal as far as wedding planning is concerned. We are just being realistic and bearing in mind the possibility of having to cut back on a few things.

Thanks again for all you kind words and messages of support ?

Hi Zippy...think it depends who its with. www.protectyourwedding.co.uk say this...

Is Wedding Insurance a good investment? Do be aware of the things that Wedding Insurance policies will and will not pay out for. If you're thinking that you'll take out a policy just in case your Bride or Groom changes their mind, think again. Most insurers will not pay out if it is your choice not to go ahead with the Wedding. They do though cover you for many things ranging from redundancy, to illness not just of yourself or your partner but of anyone on whom your wedding plans depend, but do read the policy documents carefully so you know exactly what you're buying.

Hi Again.....found this in E&L's policy, which says it does cover redundancy xxx

Unexpected unemployment (which qualifies for payment under UK redundancy law) of the bride, bridegroom or any parent making a proven significant financial contribution. We pay up to the amount stated in the schedule for all irrecoverable expenses you have incurred for reception catering services, wedding night accommodation, transport to and from the wedding/reception, wedding flowers, photographs or dress hire that have been booked but not used. We also cover you up to the amount stated in the schedule for the extra cost of alternative services you incur to enable re-arrangement of the wedding to a similar standard and thus prevent an otherwise unavoidable cancellation of the wedding or reception due to an insured cause detailed above. These extra costs are limited to a maximum of 50% of the cost of the original services.

Zippy - we've gone with E&L, given Stupidboy works for an investment bank, we thought it was only sensible so i would just sort it, it doesn't take long to do and the peace of mind is worth it

Zippy... tut tut, weren't you supposed to do this aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages ago?

We used Eccelesiastical (sp?) and they say something like "you are not covered if for lack of funds to cover the cost of the wedding unless caused by reduncancy" not sure of the small print though...

BTW - you gave me a fright when I read the thread title!

I had a fright when h2b called at lunch to tell me all about the big meeting they had today and a letter to say that come Thursday (his birthday) 10% of his workplace (about 19 people) are going to be made redundant, and there will be at least one person from each department (there are only 5 in theirs or maybe only 2 depending on how they are classing the department)

If the worst happens we may have to put a hold on the wedding plans. What concerns me is if he is lucky this time, what's to say they don't have another sweep in a few months time. Right now we have only paid out £500 on deposits. Come March it will be over £1000. At least if we sort out wedding insurance now we will have a bit of security.

Oh no Zippy - thats awful. How stressful for you. Def get the insurance sorted in that case (but check that OH being told that today won't void the policy)... when our place started making cuts I checked the policy and it really set my mind at rest... one less thing to worry about.

Hope its all okay - hopefully he will know soon and like you say there aren't any more in the future.

Thanks everyone, I'm waiting till after Thursday to sort out wedding insurance. If the worst happens then we wait to see if h2b can get another job before deciding whether to hold off or not and risk losing the £500. Once we get through Thursday we get insurance just in case there is another wave, the letter only mentions the 10% this week so will be ok if we get it after.

I suggested we postpone the wedding but he says he is marrying me whatever happens, just might have to sell the wedding transport and cut out the sit down meal and just do a finger buffet. I was quite upset at the possibility of having to cancel our wedding but more upset when he asked if I will still love him as much without a job, silly boy!

Anyway I'm sticking around for as long as possible, you can't get rid of me that easily!!!

Bless him! What a stressful time for you both. Hope all is well Thursday.

Sounds very sensible - if you have to scale back plans a little its not the end of the world is it, the most important thing is getting married.

Fingers crossed Zippy that all is well on the job front for H2B.

Insurance is definitely peace of mind. I didn't have any until after we had paid out a bit of money but they cover previously paid deposits. We are with a company called weddingplan.

Glad to hear you will still be googling for us no matter what ?
