Advice on Vows?

Lettie, 5 March, 2022 at 07:39 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 6
Hi, I’m looking for advice from others who have written their own wedding vows. Our ceremony will be a civil ceremony and we did not like any of the suggested vows given by the registrar. We want something short but not cheesy. So far we are liking this -

Come just as you are and we shall live happily ever after, for all of our days. I am sealed to you as you are sealed to me.”
However neither of us have much knowledge of weddings and have never attended a wedding either. I would like an unbiased opinion on these vows, do they sound odd or too unusual? Is it weird for both of us to repeat the same vow?

Vows are so personal. If this is how you both feel and what you both want to say to each other then that is exactly what what you should do. It's literally about what promises and commitments you two want to make to each other, not what others think you should.

It's unusual to say the same thing (when you are writing your own vows) but I also think that's quite lovely as it's a shared sentiment.

If you want my completely unbiased opinion, I think the first sentence is beautiful but I'm not sure about the "I am sealed to you as you are sealed to me"...

Personal vows are hard! From speaking to our registrar they are more like a set of promises you make to the other person. Something like the below would work, we have done individual personal vows but following the style below:

I promise to always smile when you laugh and hug you when you cry. I promise to never take you for granted and thank you for everything you do and all the love you give. I promise to pick you up when life knocks you down and be by your side always. I promise to comfort you, protect and encourage you.

I will always hold your hand because when you hold mine, my nerves calm, and though all may not be right with the world, all is right with us.

In honesty I dont think what you have are vows, but it is up to you. If you can write someting a bit more individual and personal you could then incorporate wheat you have written somehow and tweak the wording.

I agree with Charlotte. While you’ve got a lovely sentiment in what you wrote in your original message, it’s not actually a vow. I’m sure there’s lots of websites with guidance for writing your own vows, so have a Google. I would also recommend looking at the vows used in different religions/cultures/etc to help with inspiration.
