Alternatives to canapés?

MrsG_to_be, 8 October, 2014 at 16:32 Posted on Planning 0 9

We have two hours of drinks reception after the ceremony until dinner 3pm-5pm and need to provide a light bite for guests so they aren't starving! Our caterers charge about £600 for 4 canapés per person which I can't afford but said I can outsource.
Can you please sugges alternative snacks that aren't too filling but substantial enough and suitable to serve and eat outside whilst drinking? Budget is tight so can't really afford more than £200 quid if I can help it!

Thanks

How many guests do you have? Smiley smile

we're thinking of doing our own cheese tower sort of thing.. so lots of blocks of different cheeses, crackers, grapes and some fruit.. You could have some crusty bread and chutney too?

How about making your own flavoured popcorn, that guests could have in small paper cones? Or you could get some delicious breads and serve those with oil and balsamic vinegar for guests to nibble on.

Gazpacho can also be very cheap to make and guests could have those in shot glasses. Good luck with the big day x

Excellent thread! I have googled this a lot.

We are doing the same, hundereds of pounds for canapes seems like bad use of the money. Our venue is very DIY so lots of kitchen space and also time to prepare as a lot of people will be staying the night before. We will only have an hour to an hour and a half so not ages but there may be people who have missed lunch and I know what I get like if I'm hungry...!

So far I have only got as far as nice crisps and dips, olives, sundried tomatoes, maybe some skewer things like this http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/5186/tomato--basil-and-mozzarella-skewers.aspx

I like the idea of the gazpacho but my wedding is April and I am starting to panic it is going to be freezing. Any other suggestions much welcomed ladies : )

I am thinking of just putting trays of things out for people to help themselves - also gives people an excuse to wander around if they get stuck in a conversation...

Have you looked at marks and Spencer's canapés? Someone mentioned them to me and I had a look and they look great. They are made to order and you can get 24 pieces for £8! They go up in price from there depending on what you get, but the most expensive I can across was 24 for £12 so still very affordable. Just go on the m & s website in the food section.

Sainsburys do platters of nibbles, eg veggies with dips. I think nuts & crisps would be good too.

    Hi,

i went to a wedding go a very close friend and she cut her cake before the reception and served it as canapés! I thought this sounded a bit odd before the wedding, but it worked really well. Plus it saved a load of cash and meant everyone had a proper taste of the cake. X

I don't know what time of year you're getting married, but as an alternative (and cheaper!) canapé option, our venue offers strawberries dipped in chocolate. These would be so easy to DIY which would make it even cheaper!!

Ive been debating canapes but they are alot of money so think we are going to go for a chocolate fountain.

i have found one local to me which is on offer for £195 for 2 hours with unlimited chocolate and dips and a member of staff attending it
