Am I getting too ahead of myself?

Jen31601, 30 January, 2012 at 11:20 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi everyone, I'm new on here after getting engaged on 8th January ?

My mum and OH think I'm getting a bit too ahead of myself but just need some reassurance that I'm not or a reality check if you think I am!!

3 days after getting engaged I bought a wedding Groupon and set the date of 2nd March 2013. I knew if I didn't then we'd end up paying 3 times as much for the venue, breakfast, reception, etc. We had both decided we wanted to get married next Spring so it worked in ok.

I've already bought my dress as I absolutely fell in love with it and knowing my luck it would be discontinued if I waited until nearer the time. Now I'm keen to get all the other bits like photographer, flowers, photo booth, cars, etc booked and deposits paid so we can then start saving like mad to pay the final balances. My OH keeps saying "we've got lots of time, there's no rush" but I don't think he realises that things do get booked up pretty quickly!

It's 1 year and a month away - should I hold off a bit or am I doing it ok? I'd hate to leave it until the last minute and then find I'm getting stressed because what I want is all booked!

Hiiiiii, congratulations on your engagement, and welcome to Hitched ?

With a year to go I think you are fine to get organising things - suppliers book up a year in advance and more now.

You're fine. My wedding is even further away, and even though we've only booked the venue (with catering included), I've pretty much decided everything else already.

Apparently you should be looking at photographers ASAP, as good ones will book up. So, my OH and I have already met with one and are meeting another, and whichever one we like best we're going to go ahead and book, having really liked the first one.

I'm going to hold off on booking things until summer myself, but I think 1 year ahead isn't too early at all. Just be sure you choose things that you won't change your mind about. My SIL bought her wedding dress 15 months before her wedding and ended up not liking it by the time they got married. So, while I've picked out my dress, I'm going to hold off on ordering it until summer.

    Congrats on your engagemnt!

Not At all, i got engaged in June last year by the August we had booked everything up and i had bought my dress in september, Im getting married 22nd September so I had things booked 13/14 months in advance. Think thats perfect timing, means you wont be so stressed nearer the day ?

    Enjoy planning your Wedding. xxx

EEEEE DATE TWIN! DATE TWIN! I am so excited about this! ? My colleagues just looked at me like I'm crazy when I accidentally jumped and said yippeee!!!

Massive congrats on engagement and welcome to hitched! ?

You are so not getting ahead of yourself, my motto is why wait and leave everything to the last minute and stress out about it when I could easily spread things out and take my time a bit more. Definatley get your tog sorted next.

    Whereabouts are you located?

My daughter is getting married April 2013... and we're panicking that we're not far enough along.

Best advise is get the big things booked such as tog, entertainment, cars etc as the good ones get booked early. Many of my Saturdays are booked at least a year in advance, even two years. I had my first 2014 enquiry back in November!

    Nothing wrong being organised!

    But

My word of advice would be just to make sure you are happy with what you are buying now. There is nothing worse than buying stuff far too early then a couple of months down the line they are either in the sales or you spot something much nicer for less money!

I, like you did everything with over a year to go! I have less stress, everything is practically paid for and done. I stopped looking for things once I'd bought them but I still see things now that make me go aahhh I want that..too late!

Do you know that your sig says you got engaged on the 8th October 2012?!?!?!

OP, the only thing about organising everything early is that you'll have little left to do the closer you get. Not that that's a bad thing though Smiley laugh

I know, that's what people keep saying. But I'm just so excited! I want to get everything booked and then I'll leave bits like making the invites, table plan and place names, decorating my shoes, sorting favours, etc until nearer the time Smiley smile

Make a list of what you want - look down the list and sort the items that might get booked up - although March is slightly out of the main season so it may be a bit easier than leaving everything to the last moment for an August wedding.

I think its good to get all the big things done now then you have a good idea of how much you need to save to pay the final balances and like you said you can do all the little details closer to the time. The more organised you are the smoother things will go, well thats the theory anyway Smiley smile I am doing my 2013 bookings now and couple of weddings I have for later this year the couples booked beginning of last year so I wouldn't say you were getting ahead of yourself.

We book our venue 18 months before the wedding, I pratically had everything book and deposits paid before the 'a year to go mark'

So I would say defo not too ealry. Plus I find it better to be more organised than wait until the last min and get stressed out.

You're my DATE TWIN Kyz23!!! hehe

It's never too early too start, my dad used to take the mick out of me for wanting to get everything done so early, he said to me "For god sake, anyone would think your were getting married tomorrow the way you're going on!" But my wedding is now 7 months away & i'm so glad I cracked on & did everything when I did
