Am i in the wrong

hope, 2 May, 2008 at 07:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I am waiting to have some patch testing as I have some sort of allergy on my eye lids which is causing bad excema which is sore and itchy. I moved house just over six months ago and the referal came through in jan for the consultation appiontement (which in iself took 6 months to get)

A month ago I chase the hospital to be told there is a long waiting list and they would be in touch.

Roll on to yesterday I ask the doctors to help me chase them as it is a nightmare getting hold of someone. They call me to say that they can't find my records - At this point I burst into tears as I have been living with this problem for nearly two years now. Eventually I got another call to say that they have solved the mystery and I didn't tell the hospital that I had moved and changed my address and name. I had filled in the change of address purple form from the doctors and on the section with my name put my maiden name in (')s I wasn't told that I would need to let the hospital know seperately and it didn't even enter my head that it would be seperate.

I am on the waiting list but they still can't tell me when I will have the tests

I can't afford to go private either

I hope it comes through soon. ?

I only had to wait a couple of months for my skin prick test appointment and then another couple of months for my challenge test (which I've had to postpone due to illness). That was through an immunology department though, and I think from memory yours is through a dermatology department?

Yes it is - i am coming to the end of my teather - they are so itchy and it is so hard not to touch them as by rubbing them is the only relief for the itching

They have taken so long to sort this out - I am in agony

If anyone has any tips please can I have them ?

I have excema just on my eyelids too. It sometimes is so bad that the skin cracks, bleeds etc. I think Welsh Totty has the same problem?

I've been using HC45 - a low level hydrocortisone cream that you can buy over the counter. You're not "supposed" to use it on your face but I had it prescribed at one point so I'm not overly concerned about that, I just have to fib a bit to the woman in Boots. It does help a lot.

I had exactly the same problem as you for more than a year. It started while we were doing an extension on our home and I was coming into contact with plaster dust, cement and general dust. I suspect it was caused by that.

I did use Eumovate for a while but was told off for this by my sister, who's a doctor, as it is far too strong and thins the skin on the face, and that can actually make it more susceptible to infection. She recommended that if I had to use a steroid cream on my face (which, as you know, isn't advised) I should use a 0.1 per cent hydrocortisone cream. I've tried a few and found the only one that cleared it up was Dermacort. It's widely available online. I think the key is not to use it too much as your eczema does tend to become 'immune' to certain creams after a while. I use it alone twice-a-day, and don't use any other moisturiser until it's all sunk in.

    It's cleared mine up briliantly.

    Good luck

Evening Primrose Oil and Emu oil have had good results for eczema sufferers.

Have you tried E45 on your eyelids?

My daughter gets eczema on her eyelids a lot, the doctor did prescribe hydrocortisone for the eye area but I understand it can thin the skin in that area.

I've been searching for the oil I used to give my daughter but haven't found it yet, it was very affective. I'll keep looking.

    ? poor you

It does sound like something i've had in the past - twice it was herpessomethingorother (NOT the STD as there's a form of the herpes virus which is airborn) and I've recently had itchy eyelids, that have now cracked and i've been bleeding from..

Went to the doc's the other day, who prescribed me a hydrocortisone cream called Efcortelan cream (1%). I kid you not - the cream has pretty much healed the eyelids already!

Hope you hear from the hospital soon ❤️

Hello, I get this too, the main stay of my eczema is all around my eyes and I end up looking like a panda when its really bad. I use a 0.05% HC cream when I have to (I try and avoid it) but Ive had it now for coming up to 18 years and it wont go away.

I paid to go and see a consultant dermatologist privately when it first flared up as ther was an 18 month waiting list, it was worth paying as I was booked in within a week, diagnosed and a list of suitable creams sent to my doctors to add to my notes should I need them.

The other problem I have it the fact Im allergic to certain ingredients in creams and ointments which limits what I can use. You may have a similar problem and some moisturinsers could aggrivate it. Im allergic to Parabens, lanolin and anything parrafin based all of which are common ingredients in creams.

I have had a revalation though in the past year and that is LUSH, they make most of their stuff without those ingredients Im allergic to. Might be worth a trip there to get a moisturiser without parabens / lanolin in and see how you go with that.

    ❤️

My husband had an allergy problem, and when he went to his doctor he was able to choose which hospital he went to. The GP looked into the waiting lists on a computer system and booked him into the hospital with the shortest list. He was seen, tested and treated within two months.

We are in London, not sure if this system is available where you live? Can you not see if there is another hospital somewhere in travelling distance with a shorter waiting list?

I had a similar problem, and still do get the occasional flare up. I ended up going to St Marys hospital near Paddington(a specialist eye hospital)
What they suggested to me may not be good for you, although over the counter Optichrom really did ease the problem. After you put it on it feels like the eyes are burning for a few moments although after a couple of days the problem really eases off (btw I had eczma as a child)

Another option for a stronger medication that the hospital suggested is Raptil. This is only on prescription though. Basically its similar to Optichrom although more effective.
