Amitriptyline

Hi

I have just come off a 75g dose of Amitriptyline (was taking it to help me with sleep) , I have done it gradually and with the advice of my doctor,

I seem to have lots of symptoms- fuzzy head, palpitations and sleepless nights.

However, yesterday night, I just started crying, sobbing, couldn't stop, I was a little bit sad about something, but normally I would deal with it without tears. I feel exhausted and have a headache today from the amount I cried. Does anyone think this could be another side effect of coming off the drugs? I am close to tears now and it is driving me mad, it is such an alien feeling to me.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thank you in advance

Mf xxx

Well doses of 100mg+ or so are seen as an anti-depressant so given you were on 75mg and were still in the sleep/pain dose but it's quite possible your brain had adjusted to being on it. IT could just take a bit of time for your brain to re-adjust to not being on it. How quickly have you reduced the dose? I'm not surprised you aren't sleeping well and having other symptoms while coming off it. Hopefully it will pass soon very soon. Have you spoken to your doc about your recent symptoms? The lack of sleep could be making you more emotional, I can't cope without sleep either.

I'm on 150mg now and have been on it since 1997 (minus one year) but until the last few weeks have never been above 100mg. Below 100mg, I've always needed additional anti-depressants but now I'm just on amitryptyline and seem to be doing ok for now. I cannot sleep without it and know I'm addicted, which I hate.
