any medics - upper abdominal pain... any thoughts?

Hubble, 7 May, 2009 at 22:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

I will go and see my GP eventually - but don't have any time off work for a few more weeks yet and i would really welcome some thoughts / advice / anecdotal experiences.

For maybe 8-10 months I have been suffering on and off, and lately more on than off, with a dull dragging, aching sensation in the middle of my body just below my ribcage and quite deep inside.. It often aches in my back as well.

Googling (!) only suggests pancreatis - which i am sure it isn't since i am in now way a heavy drinker -( maybe 4-5 units a week max, and v rarely all in 1 go!)

What other mild things could it possibly be do you think - and what can i do to help manage the symptoms. I know you can't diagnose me - and i will get a proper check up - but i'd be interested to know in advance what the range of diagnosis MAY possibly include.

Not really expecting anyone to reply tbh, but just thouht i'd post it anyway on the off chance!

I reckon i am just not drinking enough water actually.... although i would've thought that would manifest itself more in the kidneys /bladder - and boy i know what THAT feels like! OR it's just a whopping lack of core muscle strength. Is this possibly the most likely cause?

I suffer from reflux oesophogitis, which has similar manifestations to what you are describing. I think you need to see a GP as there will be many specific questions that they would want to ask before making a diagnosis.

My doctor knows that I will google away if I don't feel fully informed, and said that I should look here for sensible information:

Apparently, it's the same information that GPs access. That said, you should still go to the GP!

Yeah, maybe something like oesophagitis or reflux. Trapped wind?

Is there no way you could to a doctor sooner? Maybe an evening appt?

It wont be pancreatitis, or id very much doubt it. My boyfriend had this 8 times from the age of 18-22. Each time he was very very unwell in hospital. I know you can get chronic pancreatitis, which wouldnt necessarily require a hospital stay but id imagine you'd need to be a heavy drinker or have had many bouts of acute pancreatitis.

Hope u mange to see a doctor soon and feel better.

How weird, I was thinking about this all the way to work. I've had similar 'pains' (although usually it doesn't hurt so much) - for aaaaaages, but at first I thought I'd just been sitting badly or carrying too heavy a bag, because it feels a bit like muscle pain. But recently it's started stabbing on and off, although still not very painful. This morning I was running and I thought I had a stitch, but it didn't go away like a stitch usually did, and it hurt when I started running again. In fact, it still hurt a little bit when I was walking to work.

Dr Google suggests it could be something to do with the gallbladder?
