Any part-time teachers around?

jessica.rabbit, 30 August, 2008 at 09:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

How does your school treat inset days with Part time staff?

If you attend an inset day on a day which you do not normally work, are you usually paid to attend that day, and do you have to fill a form in (like an overtime/supply form) to get paid?

or, if you attend an inset day on a day when you do not normally work , do you then get a day off in lieu?

As a 0.6 teacher, I have to attend an inset day this Tues when I don't normally work this day, but all the other inset days are on my contracted days anyway

Not PT but know what happens at our school. We have a .5 class share where they do alternate Mondays so that they attend staff meetings every 2 weeks and pass on any info. For Inset they do half each, unless it is a whole school issue when they will be asked to attend and given a day off elsewhere. We have had occasions where the head has asked for TA's or mid day staff to attend for certain training which has been paid for as well.

I imagine it is up to the head's discression if you get overtime or a day off, but basically if we had .6 staf they would be expected to attend 3 out of 5 insets, no matter what day they fall on.

? Darla. I have spoken to two different people in HR who have told me different information. One said that you shoul be paid because if you work on days other than your regular days then you are in effect working overtime and your usual pay covers the days you normally work. Then, another person I spoke to (at a different time) said that you would be expected to attend without pay as it is 'part' of your contract. I don't actually have a contract to check, so at the moment I've sent a quick e-mail to my union rep to ask if she can clarify the situation. I will have to put my son in nursery for this extra day, which I will also have to pay for. Usually on Tuesdays I do supply at another school, so I have had to tell them I can't work that day.

Just a quick update for any other part time teachers out there. I did contact my union NASUWT about this. According to NASUWT, there are new regulations in the 'Blue Book' which state that from 1st Sept 2008, part time teachers only have to attend INSET on their agreed days (days they normally work). They can choose to work on other days (including inset days) but must be paid for them. These regulations are very new and so lots of people don't know about them yet. Attendance Inset is no longer on a Pro Rata basis.

Unfortunately (for me!!) the new acting head at my school is not aware of the new terms and conditions for part time teachers, and so if I want to be paid for last weeks inset days which she asked to to attend, I may have to ask my union rep to fill her in on the new regulations.

JR I'm interested you mention this, I had heard that something like this was coming in to place. So far I attend all insets that fall on the days that I work, but I feel pressurised to attend days that fall outside of my regular hours. This is difficult for me, because I sometimes want to attend the training, or need to, to get stuff done. This means I have childcare conflicts and if my Mum can't have my daughter then I have to shell out £37 for a day at nursery. I'm glad that this is the case now, just hope someone tells my new Head too!

Here's another discussion I have found about the same thing on mumsnet.

Hi Cheesecake, Here's another discussion I found about this on mumsnet

    https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/2724/601741

I had a look at the pay and conditions document on the teachernet site.

    http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/management/payandperformance/pay/News/

It's a very lengthy document and you have to sift through lots of other info, but there is a section which addresses what is new for 2008 (from 1st Sept) and it does cover new arrangements for part time teacher regarding pay and working time. It is all there in black and white. It seems that the new documents have not reached schools yet though. I have found it really difficult mentioning it to our new Head so early on in the term. I don't want her to think I'm being fussy about pay, but at the same time, a day's pay is a lot of money to miss out on. At the moment, she hasn't heard anything about the new arrangements. I think she think's I'm wrong about it, but the school bursar is 'looking into it'. She says she'll get back to me about it on Wednesday when I'm next in school.
