anyone been to bali? or mauritius?

bluewater, 11 November, 2008 at 18:50 Posted on Planning 0 11

Am looking at the above two for our honeymoon in aug 09 - anyone been to either? good/bad? pros/cons? i am ideally looking for an all inc package, which might be better in mauritius - is it worth it in bali, or is everything really cheap once you leave the hotel? am i being silly in asking whether it is safe or not? FCO suggests it might not be, due to recriminations for bali bombers being executed 2 days ago... but am wondering if i am being OTT.

very grateful for any advice.

ta ?

    Hiya

I've been to Bali, in fact I just about managed to scrape out alive as I was in that street where the bomb went off 24 hours earlier. Weird.

That aside - it's a beautiful place. I stayed in Nusa Dua which is lovely. The beaches weren't all that cracked up to be though although they are lovely in Kuta (where the bomb went off). I would recommend it, we stayed in a bed and breakfast that was five star and it was fantastic. We ate out every night and the food was so cheap and we were treated like royalty everywhere we went. If you decide to go I recommend stopping off at Bankgok on the way for a few nights to break up the flight - that is what I did and Bankgok is - well just go and see for yourself lol!!

Well Bali is an Aussie's second home and I have been twice. It is a beautiful place with really wonderful people. It is dirt cheap and the shopping is wonderful!! it depends on what part you go to....some places are more exclusive and spa like and the others are more eating and drinking and good time out places. I would go somewhere lively but more family orintated....it is nothing like party hard places like parts of Greece or anything like that so do not worry!

The people are really friendly but can be very pushy as well so never agree to come back and buy something as they will take that as a contract and hound you and find you in your hotel till you do buy it lol

We went to Bali 3 months after September 11th. It was absolute paradise and the people are so friendly, always smiling. It was very quiet when we went as a lot of people had cancelled due to the panic which followed the twin towers and we virtually had the hotel to ourselves. We also stayed in Nusa Dua and it was beautiful. The hotel had it's own private beach (most do) and it was just as we imagined. Shopping is wonderful although they can be persistent! They also pester you for taxis the minute you walk out of your hotel but we just said "Walking - thankyou!" and they left us alone. We felt perfectly safe. If you are frightened of mini beasts, you might find it a bit scary! Most of the hotels don't have doors because it's so warm and the reception areas tend to be open plan so you quite often see lizards, spiders etc in the public areas. I would highly recommend going to the reptile park and seeing the Komodo dragons - awesome! I would also recommend a stop off too as it's a long flight. We were supposed to be stopping off in Singapore for a few hours but because we were delayed in Heathrow, we had to run from our first flight to the next because they were holding the plane up for us. Not sure what the situation is at the moment but have a look on the Foreign office website and it will tell you if it's considered safe or not.

Mauritius is our top choice at the moment for Sept 09, but we can't decide on hotels. Which one are you at Ashmegdj?

    Well that's a good question ?

We are going to a few different places as part of a multi centre holiday and it normally includes the Maritim but that is closed for the whole of next summer so we are waiting to see what the alternative is.

    Where are you looking at?

They all look good! We can't decide... we really like Sugar beach, The Oberoi, Legends etc but our budget is more Veranda Pointe aux Biches.

Which ones were you thinking of? I didn't know the Maritum was closed all next summer, why is that?

I haven't really looked too much because we want to see what is in the package.

They all look lovely though. It's shut April to Septmeber for refurb.

I'll post when we find out what the hotel they offer is and whether we go for it.

Hiya, i went to tme Maritim Hotel Turtle Bay in Mautitius in June 2007 and it was beautiful! We had on-off weather as we went in their winter but the island is lovely. It's so relaxing there. We went for a friends wedding.

I would definitely recommend it. HTHs x

We went to Bali for our honeymoon in July and to be honest have told everyone that we've spoken to since that we wouldn't recommend it. As soon as I got out of the airport I was disappointed. I imagined a tropical paradise but it felt like another of our european holidays, although this could be my fault for expecting too much.

We stayed in Nusa Dua also. We can't fault the hotel but it was lucky we had a villa and pool otherwise we'd have come home very disappointed. Eating out was very cheap and we found one restaurant that was brilliant so stuck to that. One thing we did find was that in that area if you wanted to stay out after dinner there was nowhere to go. I mean I know we're honeymooners but we still wanted a night life. We had to go to Kuta for that but didn't like being hassled so left there quite soon.

We were very limited with our honeymoon choice due to the weather seasons in your 'typical' honeymoon destinations and this was the only place outside of Europe hot at this time of the year.

Good luck deciding, I found this bit the worse thing about organising the wedding!
