Anyone been to Madeira?

tahdah, 9 March, 2009 at 15:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I'm looking at this as a possible honeymoon destination. We're getting married in Portugal but don't want to stay on there, so was thinking of trying Madeira straight from Portugal.

Has anyone been, I'm presuming you'd have to fly into Funchal and not Porto???

Any reccies of other destinations we can easily go direct from Portugal?

We honeymooned there. We did fly in to Funchal.

It was pleasant enough but not 100% perfect for me. Obviously no beaches and very food orientated (I don't really get a buzz from food I'm afraid).

My parents went last year, I don't think they'd go back anytime soon though. The runway at Funchal is very short apparently. That's all I can tell you.

    I didn't realise there weren't any beaches??

There was quite a good article in Cosmo wedding, but perhaps the Madeira tourist board requested it from your answers!!

Oh yes, very short runway <dries sweaty palms on trousers> not for the faint hearted!

That's what mum said although I don't think she put it quite like that lol! I think they said it was very expensive to eat. They were in quite a nice hotel but only B&B and my dad nearly fainted when he saw how much they were charging for a meal.

I would say it depends what yoou want out of a holiday. We've been to Madeira twice, I love it. We have stayed in Canico de Baixa both times, rather than Funchal. There's not much to do there, no real shops, but then you can just get a bus to Funchal. I would say Madeira isn't really a shopping destination, more a collpase in a heap and do nothing destination. It is beautiful, but the coastline is mostly rocky. The food is fab - lots and lots amd lots of fish.
