Anyone benefitting from the rule change on July 1st that will make ceremonies legal when conducted outside?

Chloe, 24 June, 2021 at 12:22 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi all - I am a TV journalist at the BBC - and wanted to see is anyone on here set to benefit from the change in rules that will make ceremonies legally binding when conducted outside? This might be from a covid restriction point of view, but also, for example, those wanting a humanist ceremoney will now be able to conduct their service how they want it, rather than having to do the day or two before trip to the registry office for the legal element.

Please do get in touch if you are set to benefit... are you getting married on July 1st, or soon after, and now have been able to cancel the regiustry office element that was planned?

Looking forward to hearing from you! Chloe

Talking about England the law has not changed with regard to humanist ceremonies. The outside law change also only applies to venues that already have a licence to conduct a marriage ceremony, so if you have a venue that is a field/ farm that has not got a licence to hold a ceremony then you still will not be able to have your ceremony outside there.

But it could be that they can now apply for a licence whereas before they could not.

Yes - you are quite right - thank you - humanist ceremonies are still not legally recognised... as you say, just civil ceremonies in the outside space of registered venues will be allowed from July 1st... so now the hunt is on for the couple that will become one of the first to be legally married in a civil ceremony outside... please do get in touch if that is you!

You do realise that you have been allowed to get married outside for years in England. The only july 1st change is that it can now be fully outside as before it had to be in permanent structure such as a bandstand like this.

We are benefiting (I guess). We get married 10th July in London borough Westminster - because of the change we’ll be getting married on our venues terrace. Really happy as now we, our wedding party and our guests no longer have to wear masks (thank goodness- my photos and videography 🥳) and we can have slightly more guests. The countdown is on!
