Anyone else feeling ripped off?

I'm absolutely fuming tonight!

Sorry, but I'm about to blow!

We're an older couple getting married at a National Trust venue later this year. We booked our ceremony with them as soon as we got engaged last spring. I've been asking them since then for details of their canapés and drinks reception package for during the photos following the ceremony.

Today I've received an email saying that they can no longer offer catering at all, but if I want to bring our own drinks, corkage is £9 per bottle! This will be served, I. E. poured into glasses I have to supply, but not handed round or otherwise served, by volunteers!

I am so annoyed, mainly because I used to work there, and that is where we met. I know that the NT needs to make a profit, but we have already paid £1500 just to have the downstairs of the property for one hour before it opens to the public. I'm also annoyed as they are using the volunteers, who, with the best will in the world, are not trained hospitality staff which is part of what you pay for with corkage! Also, we're concerned about the reliability of using just volunteers!

I'm hoping to have a meeting with the wedding coordinator, (who has also announced she is leaving and the post will not be filled, we'll only have a point of contact from now on) early next week to iron this out!

Thanks for reading this far! I'll keep you posted!

That is appalling behaviour! They have no right to change the package they offer midway. Can you get a refund and book elsewhere?

I really hope you get something sorted soon. Please let us know how you get on.

    Hi there.

we’ve not heard from the venue since, and as it turns out, the wedding planner has now left!

We have had no communication on who is taking over, other than being told by the out-going person that it will probably be her boss, but no more information than that.

If we cancelled, we would lose our deposit of £750. It’s our special place, it’s where we met, so I am really loathe to cancel for that reason alone, never mind the deposit.

I am still really upset about the whole thing.

Will post OST more info as I get it. Moral of the story, don’t book a wedding at a National Trust property!

Well, we had our meeting on 5th January and we are no further forward.

We raised our objections to the £9 per bottle corkage fee, and communicated how upset and angry we were about that, and the total lack of communication about both the drinks and canapés offer.

The wedding coordinator promised she would send us notes of our meeting, which she still hasn’t, and would speak to her line manager who had suggested the corkage charge to see how this could be resolved.

I’m still waiting to hear from either of them.........

The wedding coordinator leaves at the end of the month and from then on there will no longer be a dedicated wedding coordinator, we will just have a point of contact.

I am loathe to cancel, as it’s the place where we met, and of course, all our other suppliers are based on the ceremony being held there, so would mean massive changes, but we are losing both faith and patience.

If you’re thinking about booking a National Trust property, think again!
