Cupcake26, 31 March, 2015 at 12:28 Posted on Planning 0 24

Coz I have and I can't get the thought out my head! I'm not used to walking in anything like that! What if i tread on it and rip it?!

Yes a bit, not just tripping the whole thing of getting around in a huge heavy dress with a long train...

Not sure about you, but I haven't actually had a chance to do a big strut about in it... I just know its hard to move about in confide spaces and get up on the platform they make you stand on for fittings!

I tripped over mine a bit! Lol. That was because when it was done up it was just a teeny bit too low. They're expensive for a reason though, they don't break easily! Focus on taking delicate steps and keeping your head up and you'll be fine x

In just a very short time in the dress you will learn the art of the "swoosh" when in a tight corner. And its usually going to be the groom who stands on it. One thing you cannot do easily in a train is reverse, so if you need to go backwards its sometimes better to go the long way around in a big circle ?

No not had chance to strut yet! My first fitting isn't until June, tried it on in Jan when it first came into the shop and trod on the back of it hence the worrying!

Yes, I am worried about it too. I found it very difficult to even make a few steps in when I tried it on (I bought the sample I tried on), but it was slightly to long so not surprising. I hope I will get an opportunity to practice walking in it even just for a short while once it is at its final length. I also have a cathedral length trail which will be... interesting. Once I can bustle it up it should be okay but until then I will just have to be very careful and hope no one stands on it.

Not now I'm not Smiley smile It's been altered to the perfect length with my shoes and is easy to walk in. Yes, walking backwards won't be a good idea so it's spin in the spot and pull the dress round or go in a circle. I know other people will tread on it, and if I do have to put my flat shoes in it will then be far too long so that will be interesting!

Not overly worried at this stage, but I haven't tried any dresses on yet!

On a slightly related note, I was at a formal dinner wearing a long evening gown which had a train, and a waiter stood on it. I just heard a horrible ripping sound and the waiter went completely pale and started apologizing profusely! After checking to see that there was no visible tear (a few stitches had come out around a gathered part) and that my derriere was still indeed covered, I laughed it off and told the waiter not to worry about it. Poor guy thought he was done for!

I almost tripped up after we said our vows. Haha!!! That would have been a good laugh.

My problem was not so much tripping on the dress, but that my blinking shoes had ankle straps on them and the buckle got caught on the lace of the dress! Very annoying as i didn't particularly like the shoes, but they were very comfi and i didn't have the funds to get better ones.

I had to ask the venue for some plasters to tape over the buckle. They only had blue plaster! I don't think anyone would have noticed. But i thought it was a good laugh so I showed most of my friends.

Plaster as my something blue. Not bad! ;-)

Definitely a big fear I had especially as I had to come up stairs as part of my wedding procession. A hoop under the dress helped because I coukd kick it and lift it and not have to worry about all the net layers.

    Learn to kick ?

Sounds daft, but it works. As you walk, you do a little kick forward with each step which pushes the dress out in front of you and prevents you stepping on it. My seamstress taught me that one and it worked a treat.

What about having a hoop?? It will ensure a nice space between your feet and the dress.

The one thing my wife kept saying to me over & over again on our wedding day was "DON'T STAND ON THE DRESS!"

Now I repeat that tip for all grooms! May they avoid the repeated bollockings that I got!

My dress is big and quite heavy - I have ordered a hoop for £39 extra.

I think it is going to allow me to walk and not fall.

One thing I am worried about in the same vein is kneeling at the church?! How?! I am in a corset, a long dress and a chuffing hoop! I keep thinking of the King and I movie where the ladies bend over and flask their pants!

If anyone has any tips for kneeling please do share!

I will second the idea of a hoop - I am much less worried now I am hiring one from my dressmaker - I would really struggle to trip on it as it is all held away from my feet.

I do have to walk down stairs in front of everyone to enter the hall for the ceremony so I am worried about falling over. A friend of mine fell down the stairs at the wedding ceremony and had a big cut on her leg! She managed to laugh it off!

My seamstress pinned mine up at my fitting, its at a length where my toes will just peep out at the front as i walk without me treading on the dress itself - i initally didnt think that was right, like you shouldnt even see a mere hint of foot, but it looked good, and i like that you can just about see a glimpse of shoe when walking. I did develop a weird shuffle/arms pumping up and down by my sides, like a slowed down demented power walker though....really gotta work on that! Turning around is going to have to be in a big circle or ill have to gather up the back and fling it round. Im more worried about other people treading on me, especially whilst dancing cus mine doesnt bustle up...I can be a bit of a shapeless crazy arms dancer though so people will probably give me a wide berth anyway haha! You'll be fine once youve had your adjustments cupcake26

I didn't trip over my dress but my OH did stand on it at one stage and there was an explosion of sequins. He looked up innocently to the sky pretending nothing hand happened, forgetting to wipe off the sequins from his shoe first. But we just giggled about it.

I had an awful fear of tripping over my dress, it was a monster in length and weight and I am the most clumsiest person. At the end of the day, I only had danger of it happening once during the party, when there was a dance (I don't know how this dance even originated) where men lined up and one side and women and the other, it was during the running in and out with hands held. However, I realised one of the reasons I didn't trip was that behind me was a very quiet and consciencious SIL who kept fixing it out when I was back in my original spot.

I had many nightmares of tripping up the aisle as I was married in a unevenly floored stately home, falling down steps - but you do get used and subconsciously aware of it and you will find that 'swoosh'.

I don't think my dress would suit a hoop!

I don't think mine would either, it's already got quite a nice shape as it is, I don't think I'd want it to be any wider.

Any brides who have worn a fishtail/mermaid dress with a hoop? Not sure what way to go on this as I didn't try one on with my dress in the shop...

My dad actually tripped over mine! We got married on a barge and the aisle was quite narrow.

I did have people step on my train constantly though so I bustled it during the photos.
