Anyone had alterations on a second hand dress?

Mrs*W*2B, 5 October, 2012 at 16:58 Posted on Planning 0 7

I'm going to look at a second hand dress on Sunday, I just wanted some idea of how easy it is to source your own seamstress ( not linked to a wedding shop ) and what sort of prices people have paid independant seamstresses? Also if I wanted to buy a veil or a belt/sash how would that work? Can I take my dress into the bridal shop to try on accessories? Any info welcome so I know what I'm looking at before I buy.... X

I'm near Stockport/ Manchester way...it was more of a 'is it a nightmare to find a seamstress' as I don't even know if I like the dress yet...I don't want to buy it though and find I'm going to struggle to get alterations and accessories outside of a shop thanks Smiley smile x

Some dry cleaners also do alterations. Keep an eye out if you see lots of wedding dresses hanging in their window, or ask around as they might recommend one in your area that specialises in wedding dress alterations.

I tried taking my dress (bought elsewhere) to a wedding shop to buy a veil & they said I coudlnt bring the dress! Even if I didnt put the dress on.

I got my veil from Margaret (100's of recommendations on here for her.) She can advise on style/length & will send tulle samples so you can match the colour perfectly. Her prices cant be beaten & if you dont like the finished product, she offers a full refund- NO bridal shop offers that!

I bought an unaltered dress off Ebay and found a local seamstress to do my alterations. I had the bust taken in, corset back and privacy panel put in and the hips let out, cost me £67 in total.

Check with some of your local bridal shops as the one I bought my BM dresses from did do alterations for dress bought elsewhere as long as you give them plenty of time (although they where a little more expensive) I did ask them to press my dress the week before and it cost me £10!

If you love the dress and are on a budget then go for it, my seamstress was a general alterations place but she used to do bridal and had over loads of wedding dresses hung up to be altered.

I bought a sample dress from someone off preloved who bought the dress then found out she was pregnant so postponed the wedding.

I used a seamstress attached to Bride to be by Hannah Lois in Prestwich. Was really lucky as my OH saw her for business purposes before we were engaged and told her about the engagement so when I phoned asking for help she was really helpful!
