Anyone have Bagpuss's Dorset Apple Cake recipe?

Flump, 19 October, 2008 at 14:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I've lost mine, and the link to the MSN Hitched recipe group where it might be - anyone have it in their favourites or saved to their PC please?

I cut and asted this ages and ages ago, hope this helps!

    Dorset Apple Cake

    8oz self raising flour

    4oz butter

    4oz caster sugar

1/2 lb cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced

    Grated rind of one lemon

    1 medium egg, beaten

    2oz sultanas, optional (I don't use these)

Set oven to 375F/190C/Gas Mark 5. Put the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Sir in the sugar, apples, lemon rind, egg and sultanas (if using) and mix well.Note: at this point you will be peering into your mixing bowl and wondering what on earth you've done wrong (at least I did, the first time I made this!) or cursing me for typing out the recipe wrongly. I assure you, I haven't made a mistake and nor will you have - it really is a very stiff dough, nothing like what you'd expect from a cake mix.Put the mixture into a well greased 8 inch diameter cake tin (you'll need to shove it in with your hands, it's so stiff!) and bake for 30-40 mins until golden in colour. The book suggests serving it warm as a pudding, which I think would be gorgeous, or cold, spread with butter, which I just can't imagine working. Cold, eaten as a normal cake, works just fine

Hello from a stranger. A couple of years ago, I lost the book this came from. I was really wanting to make it, so I thought I'd Google Dorset Apple Cake to see if I could find a similar recipe and up popped this thread from last year.

I'm now slightly spooked, but extremely grateful to have my recipe again ?

    Thanks very much ?
