Anyone have Rabbits, especially indoor ones?.

Buffy Somers, 1 December, 2008 at 10:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

My H surprised me with one on Friday - an early Christmas present ? We have him in a big plastic and wire cage and let him out in a safe area for an hour at night to have a run round. However I am wondering if I should buy him a 'house' ifykwim, to give him some privacy. He does have one of those chewable tubes in his cage but I'm not sure if this is enough. Also, he always has a supply of Timothy hay in his cage and I have noticed he likes laying in it. Should I supply him with normal hay to 'nest' in?. Also any other 'tips' would be great.

Cheers ?

My SD has a rabbit, Jessica. She lives outside though. She has a huge hutch with a run attached. It's about 6ft by 6ft by 4ft. I don't know much about what living stuff she needs as my husband and the kids deal with that side of things but I know she loves lettuce, vegetable leaves (cabbage, brocolli, cauli etc) apples and cucumber in the summer. We feed her pellet food as she picks the best bits from the flake food. He buys lot's of hay from the local pet shop. We used to buy straw but the guinea pig got some stuck in her eye so it's hay and hay only now.

Your rabbit will need injections for miximatosis which are about £15 and I advise you to take out some insurance for her. Ours had a scare last year and she was in hospital for 5 days on antibiotics after her heart slowed down and her body went limp. £500 it cost us as we didn't have insurance.

That's all I can think of for now, but there are plenty of others here who can help.

I have 2 giant lops. They live outside in a huge 2-storey hutch, but come in for cuddles and a run around every evening.

They love to eat hay and it's a very important sorce of fibre for them. Ours also have lots of straw for bedding. They are (apparently) easy to toilet train but although ours only use 1 corner of their hutch, they refuse to use a litter tray! We also feed our rabbits with leafy greens, carrots and small amounts of fruit every now and then- as far as I am aware, they shouldn't have "wet" type veggies like cucumber or lettuce. They are not really solitary animals, so will need a lot of human stimulation if they are to live alone. Ours like to run through and hide in (very large) tubes and have a couple of balls which they pick up and throw around. We hang their vegetables off the doors in their hutch.

I would get a house, they do like to hide away sometimes. Ours were indoor rabbits for a while, but are outside now. We still have 5 indoor guinea pigs though.

Insurance is a good idea, will save you in the long run if something happens. Also having the rabbit neutered whgen its old enough as females especially can suffer from cancers of the reproductive system when they get older.

Have a google, there are loads of good rabbit websites for more ideas

Hi, I have two although they live outdoors. I would suggest using cardboard boxes to make hidey places, just cut a flap out so bunny can get in and out. The box obviously won't last forever but if you can get some unwanted ones from somewhere they're ideal. Fill it with hay and the bunny will enjoy chewing the box up too to give him/her something to do. How big is your cage> Most indoor pet shop bought ones will be too small when rabbit is fully grown. You could consider a large dog crate or getting a puppy pen to 'fence off' an area for it? Definitely go for neutering as they can get very hormonal/aggressive/destructive. Have a look on rabbit united forum for loads of fantastic info!
