Anyone know about being a church warden?

DaffyB, 24 February, 2013 at 13:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

After church today the vicar asked me if I would consider being a church warden as one of the present wardens is retiring. I was rather shocked. At the moment I only go to church about once every 3 or 4 weeks. My immediate reaction is that I don't have the time to do something like this. I've been enrolled on a certificate with work for the past year with the aim of specialising more in the area I am interested. it's only really in the past few weeks that I've finally got round to actually putting the time into this. And I think something like this will make that even more difficult for me. I did ask what kind of responsibilities and commitiments I would have to make and he said that I should think about it first and then talk to one of the present wardens to get an idea of what would be expected of me.

So I think I'm going to have to say no, but I feel bad about that, I hate letting people down.

Is anyone here a church warden or know anything about it?

I'm not a church warden but I am on the PCC.

I wouldn't be a warden because of the time commitment but I guess it would vary depending on your church. Our wardens have some duties to do on Sundays but a lot the rest of the time - often key holders, for example and also attending PCC meetings. In our church it is mostly done by "young retired" people.

I'd start by being on the PCC if anything!

I always thought it was older retired people who did these kind of things. I'm pretty shocked that he would think to ask me. There are far more people who attend much more regularly than me. And I'm not even confirmed!

My Mum is one - I suppose she's a "young retired" person now, though she started doing it before she retired. It's only a very small country church though, so maybe not as much work as others. It doesn't seem like an enormous time commitment, but I imagine it might be harder to fit around your work than hers! There are a few meetings to go to, and she sorts out things like who is doing the flowers, opening the church for weddings, funerals etc. When my Grandpa was alive, he was also a churchwarden and it was Mum's job to try to stop him from doing At their church the churchwardens also act as communion assistants but I'm not sure if that's something that's done everywhere. She also recently organised a wedding fair there, but that was very much off her own bat!

If you're not able to do it, don't feel guilty for turning it down, but have a word with the current ones to see what it involves before you decide.
