Anyone know West Bridgford Area (Nottingham)?

Clairebecky, 30 April, 2008 at 23:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I'm thinking of moving there and am just wondering what it's like?

I know there's a couple of decent secondary schools round there and I'm told it's a nice area. I'm not sure about crime/flood risk etc though - any ideas?

Somebody suggested surrounding areas such as Gamston might be slightly cheaper for property - any other advice/suggestions welcome!

It's one of the more affluent areas of Nottingham, "West B" - got it's own M&S you know ?
I don't know it that well, but I've not heard of it flooding - either this year or in the Big Floods on 2000. In part I suspect that's because it's heavily populated and not that far from the Council Buildings. Flooding is partially caused by decisions as to where to open the various gates, and I think it's a protected area in that sense.
My friend lives in Lady Bay, which borders it - same nice area feeling, nice older properties, decent schools, but cheaper - might be worth considering.

I'm going to have to commute (at least some days) to Leicester from Sept, whilst my H works in Chesterfield, so I'm trying to find somewhere kind of in the middle. Plus my daughter starts primary and my son secondary school in Sept 2009 and I'm not overly happy with the schools where we live now.

I know the property prices are higher there, but I will be on a FT salary from Sept so I'm hoping we could stretch ourselves a bit more!

I would expect West B to Leicester to be OK... you'd go East on the A52 out to the A46 and then south. I use the A46 from that Nottingham turn off to Leicester quite a bit, and it always seems to be OK - I'd say 25 minutes to a really big roundabout which I think takes you into Leicester (it's the one that you also turn right at to head off to the M1 J21a - which I do. Never actually been into Leicester!
It's going back a few years, but my sister used to live in West B and I'm sure she worked in Chesterfield for a while. Want me to ask her how long the drive took? I'll be speaking to her tomorrow I expect.

Yeah, thanks MG, that would be useful!

I was thinking I could maybe use the train from WB to Leicester on Uni days as it's walking distance from the station to where I'd need to go. I'll be onplacement some days though so not sure where that will be, could ne Leicester, Notts or even Derbyshire!

West B is lovely. A bit "media luvvie" as its fairly close to the BBC but it really is a nice place to live. Very do-able for commuting and the train station isnt too far.

Good luck though trying to park when cricket is on!

    <sticks hand up>

I live in West Bridgford, been here for about 8 years now. It's a lovely place to live. Close to the city, but also close to the countryside and decent road links (bar the A453 at peak time [V] - althought they are meant to be sorting that out). People are friendly and lovely, it's clean and tidy, the schools are very good, good local amenities.

Some areas would be prone to flooding if the flood defences were overtopped....but it would take some flood to do that. They've just spent millions upgrading the defences. A lot of WB is up the hill anyway, so you do have options in that respect.

Crime wise, I feel very safe there. There's the usual burglaries etc, but not much in the way of violent crime etc....if someone gets mugged it seems to make the local rag and spark of a discussion about how the area is going to the dogs....clearly from people who have never lived anywhere else!

It's pretty much all expensive compared to other areas in Notts, not noticed Gamston being particularly cheaper.

In summing up....I'd recommend it ?.

    Sounds promising!

When I was looking last night online, the house prices didn't look very different to Ravenshead, which is another area I'd considered. There seemed to be quite a few modern 4 beds around the £280k and under mark which is about our maximum budget (depending on what we get for this). Some of the older houses looked more pricey or were mainly 3 beds.

I'd just need to persuade H that it's worth the extra commuting distance for him - he doesn't like getting up early!?

You'd be better by the M1- say junction 25 area where I live. Leics & Chesterfield are both 30-45 mins away.

I'll have to do some looking around I think. It will probably be a little while before we're ready to move anyway because our house needs sprucing up a bit and teh housing market is a bit dodgy at the moment!

Just to say i live in Long Eaton, and like it.
It has excellent road links being so close to the M1 and is a decent little town centre.
Its also in the middle of derby and nottingham for a bit of shopping.

Someone told me some of the town is in a bit of a flood zone - is that true?

I'm Sandiacre. I'd avoid Chad tbh. Long Eaton has some good properties for that money, good schools. Breaston has a very good primary but more expensive housing- lovely villagey place to live though. Risley, same as Breaston. Even Borrowash would tick the boxes although you are slightly further from the M1.
I was born and brought up in this area so you can pick my brains if you wish.?

Maybe Iris knows the answer to that one, I've only lived here for about 6 months though hubby has been in the area all his life.
I know the bridge coming from Chilwell into L.E tends to flood when theres heavy rain but not sure if any houses are affected.
I'm originally from Derby and had never heard of Long Eaton til I met mu husband!!

No real flood worries TBH. You do get flooding at the tail end of Sawley but only right by the river.

Hmmmm, some food for thought then! I think Long Eaton is probably a bit cheaper for property than Bridgford isn't it?

Villagey places would be nice, but only if they're not too far out and have decent transport links because my son will be into his teens soon enough and I wouldn't want to have to drive him every tiome he wanted to go somewhere!?

Long Eaton is a lot cheaper than Bridgford?
Breaston and Risley pride themselves on being villages but are really attached to towns and on main roads so no worries about transport.

Well Long Eaton isn't great but it's OK. Shops go as far as Dotty Ps, New Look, Peacocks, Tesco and Asda. ?
Very close to Notts and Derby though (8 miles each) and pretty good public transport-trains & buses.

I live about 10 mins from West Bridgford and work in Leicester. Commute takes approx 40 mins right into leicester city centre at 8am. M1 into leicester in the mornings takes forever!! Where will you be working?
