Anyone married at Edinburgh Castle?

Lidders, 30 January, 2009 at 17:31 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi,

My h2b and I are looking into the possibility of a wedding at Edinburgh Castle. I wondered if anyone is going to be or has got married at the castle? Would love to get some more info on it apart from what the website says!

Thanks! ?

    Hi,

My first marriage was in St Margaret's chapel in Edinburgh Castle. (no reflection on the venue that I married the wrong man ? ) We did it on a bit of a shoestring budget so not sure how much help I'll be but if there's anything you want to ask I'll do my best!!!

    Hey,

Thanks for replying. We are looking to do it on shoestring budget as much as possible too! Did you have a reception in the castle afterwards? h2b's dad used to be in army and has contacts there, so he is looking into it for us at the moment as we just want to get an idea on price to know if it's an option. Altho it seems to be taking some time for him to get the info so anything you could tell me would be great! ?

    Thanks

    Susie

Hiya, no we didnt have the reception at the castle it was outside our budget at the time so we ended up having it back at camp ? . XH was in the army so the actual service was quite cheap, think it was about £100 for the chapel and the Padre did the ceremony for free. The chapel is tiny I think from memory that the most people you can fit in is about 26 (it was 9 years ago so it might be different now). The groom and guests have to walk up through the castle to the chapel but the bride gets driven ?. They also offer the option of a harpist to play you down the ailse (about £450 think) but didn't allow you to play music instead so I had some of the children sing instead.

It was a lovely place to get married, highly recommended and I know that the restaurant (sorry can't remember its name) on site that caters for wedding receptions is absolutely lovely but then so are many of the hotels set down the royal mile and princes street so it might be worth investigating them too.

From memory we organised most of the castle arrangements through them directly, it might be worth a call to them, not sure how strict the rules are that either the bride or the groom has to be military or whether that is purely for the chapel and wouldnt matter if you went for a civil ceremony in the restaurant.

Yes the chapel is weeny, but you could have a selected few guests at the ceremony and then have your reception with everyone else at the apex as it has stunning views of the castle. Penguin had here wedding reception there and it was fabulous!
