I definitely put on weight when I was on the injection. However I couldn't say it was 100% just down to that as I was also going thorugh a major lifestyle change at the same time. There may be a medical person around that you can tell you the science behind it as I have heard that this is a known side effect.

My sister in law gained 2 stone over a few months. As far as I'm aware she didn't change her eating habits or exercise. She stopped having it and lost it all.

Thanks so much for all your responses. Definitely my last one then, I will get a mirena coil instead, and wait until May for this injection to wear off and the new slimmer me to emerge (deluded hopeful icon)

Everything that she said, I didn't realise how much of an effect it was having on me until I stopped it. I was evil with the mood swings too, poor H ?

I put on about two stone, and lost all libido. When I came off it my poor OH was run ragged with me playing catch-up

Yes and completly lost my sex-drive (which is how I think it works as a contraceptive!!!).

It took a few months to come back after I came off it too.

I put on 3 stone in a year when I was having the Depo injections. However, it coincided with starting an office job, having money to eat out ALOT and generally troughing like a lardy pig.

I like to blame the depo though ?

I did. I put on about a stone in just over a month. Nothing else changed in my life but the weight just piled on. I found it really hard to lose it too.

I was on it briefly years ago and stopped because it gave me horrendous headaches, but from what I've heard since it can cause a massive increase in appetite (you don't put on weight by magic!) and seriously rapid weight gain isn't uncommon at all.

I refuse to accept it's not just piled on by magic. Honestly Sophie you do talk out of your arse sometimes.?

Thanks everyone for your responses, very helpful. x

I too put on a lot of weight when I had the depo injection, my appetite went through the roof and it was no good saying don't eat as much I just HAD to eat. It also messed up my periods for a long time afterwards too but that's when I also was diagnosed with pcos, my Mum links the two although I'm not sure if it's possible. I had no sex drive as well but if I'd fancied my ex I think it might have increased slightly ?

Hmmm this has been an interesting read. I went on the depo injection after I had my baby six months ago and have put on a ridiculous amount of weight since. I'm sure it's not the primary factor but maybe it hasn't helped. Will have to think about other options as I'm due another one in a week or two.

I have the Depo, and I love it! I didn't put on any significant weight until I was really ill and started to comfort eat (so not due to the Depo), and its slowly coming off now anyway.

My weight didn't increase noticably when I was on Depo but I still wouldn't have it again. Loved it whilst I was on it as I didn't have any real side effects. However, it seemed to take ages for it to get out of my system and my periods didn't return to normal for over 2 years.

I was on depo for 2 years and for the 1st year I was fine. During the second year I put on about a stone - which for me was a huge amount - and also became too sore and inflamed insde to have sex. One good thing though was that I didn't have any migraines whilst I was on it, but started having them monthly once I came off it. My preiods returned to normal as soon as I stopped having it, which was a nuisance as I hate having them.
