Anyone read Terry Pratchett?

BunnyGirlK, 12 October, 2008 at 16:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I was going to get this for my friend for his birthday as he's a huge Terry Pratchett fan (I don't think he has this one yet though)

But I'm a bit confused as it reads like a children's book. I've never read any of his stuff but I've obviously heard of the discworld novels - are they all children's books and I've missed the point? (a bit like adults reading Harry Potter) or are the discworld the only 'adult' ones and I therefore shouldn't get this one for him?

Help!

TIA ?

Discworld is great. Obviously kids get it but the writing is very sophisticated in places and there are in-jokes that only adults would get, in my opinion any way.

I tried for years to get in to the books as my cousins raved about them. It took reading Moving Pictures, which is basically a pastiche on the whole hollywood scene. Some very clever humour and plays on words - I doubt a child would get the reference of a film called "Blown Away" set against the backdrop of a war (it's much sillier than that).

    Definitely buy them.

That one is one of the kids ones, you'd be better off sticking to diskworld stuff

If you think he may be up to date on all the discworld books, then perhaps you could go for a 'companion' book. For example, I have 'The Art of Discworld' and 'The Wit & Wisdom of Discworld'

Thanks Taffie, I'm not sure if he's got those, how about this?

It was only published last month so I think there's less chance of him having it (he's a bit skint at the moment!) Does it look any good?

I think that Terry Pratchett is the co-author is a good sign ?

I would personally find it interesting, because I love the way that random myths and parts of history turn up with the Discworld twist.

Please may I stick my oar in and go against the general crowd?

Nation is an amazing book. It is less slapsticky than the Discworld books. It doesn't have any of Pratchett's other recurring characters. It is much less of a 'light' read than any of his other stuff. The protagonists are children (well, young teenagers, anyhow), but the themes and issues are very adult. It deals with ideas like what is it that creates a society, and how do we know we are acting in the best interests for the people around us.

I love the Discworld books, but Nation is definitely for adults.

I loved Nation - I read it twice in the first week that I bought it. I'm 29, so quite a way away from being a kid!?

I do think that Pratchett fans will like it in spite of the fact that it isn't a Discworld book.

I was at Forbidden Planet in London last week and they had some signed copies of both Nation and The Folklore of Discworld. Just checked on their website and their not listing signed copies on there, but you might be able to order by phone.
