Anyone remember the Crytstal Maze? Need help with (kids) themed games.

In what can only be described as a moment of madness I've agreed to doing a Crystal Maze party for my daughter's 8th birthday. When I was a girl, my dad and I used to watch 'The Adventure Game', and Anna and I now watch the Crystal Maze (on Challenge if you're interested!) to carry on that tradition. We both love it...and so started my predicament.

Can any of you wonderful Hitchers think of Crystal-Maze style games (don't have to be authentic) for 8 year olds (or which could be adapted) and which could be set up by a ham fisted amateur in a back garden? Space isn't a problem as a friend of ours has a huge back garden (including an entire field's worth of lawn) he will lend us for Anna's party, but the technological heights of Crystal Maze are some way beyond my competence.

The only game we've definitely decided on is 'Guardian, where is the crystal?', where they have 4 boxes with different creatures on the front nd have to get clues from 3 guardians to eliminate all but one box.

The Zones in Crystal Maze were: Ocean, Future, Aztec, Medieval, Industrial (replaced with Ocean I think). I can do water, but only a paddling pool, so can't do any rowing games.

The more I write, the crazier it sounds. What I have I done? ?

Definitely something involving water pistols - having to fill up a container from 10 feet away ?

Oh, great idea. I'm sure I can work with that one. Thanks P&aP.

Can you rig up a balance scale (see-saw?) and have a selection of weights? they have to balance the scale to get the crystal?

Ooooooh, I loved the Crystal Maze. They used to divide the games up into skill, mental and physical (I think) so you definitiely need to have some obstacle course in there that the kids have to complete.

What about one of those team games (not sure if it will be team or individual pursuits?) where you tie a web of ropes between trees and as a team, the kids have to get through to the other side, without touching the ropes?

And, what about, for a 'mental' challenge, some kind of conundrum, where they have to rescrabble letters to make a word ('birthday' or something).

Hmmmmm. I'll carry on thinking. But definitely think you should go with P&Ps idea of a water pistol challenge.

They also often had one driving a radio-controlled car through an obstacle course - I'm sure somebody could lend you one.

I'm sure there was often one that involved undoing bolts with an allen key against the clock - that should be fairly easy to rig up with bits from B&Q.

Anagrams or word puxxles are easy eg write out the "clue" and snip the words into blocks of 2-3letters for them to reassemble:

Try : E_ BE ND TH ED SH HI

Most shows featured of archery/target practise - you could double up the use of water pistols and use them for this.

Some sort of picture puzzle would also be a good idea, or similar problem solving.

    Team Game:

De-arm the bomb? Rope circle to mark out a no entry zone, plastic cup in the middle of area filled with something, selection of sticks etc to get the "bomb" out without tipping the cup or entering the circle

Didn't they sometimes blindfold the person doing the challenge and then have the others doing the directions...this could be for a basic obstical course or something.

One idea I had which would be easy to do, but not sure how Crystal Maze like it would be is if you had a ball pool you could hide the crystals in there and they then have to jump in a find as many as they can against the clock.

You are all geniuses (genii?) Thanks so much for the ideas so far. Anna wants 16 different games? - maybe not - but these are a great start.
