I have a friend who is a teacher in Bangkok - currently in her first year of a 2 year contract. I'm sure she said something along the lines of .... you get all the tax which you have paid in Thailand back if you leave within 2 years? Is that right? How long have you been there? Sounds like it could be a good financial reason to move on! But obviously it needs to be the right move for you with the right prospects. Have you applied for other jobs? You don't sound excited about Beijing itself ... buy the lonely planet guide and see how you feel then!

How quickly were you thinking of starting a family anyway?

I echo Spring - they both sound like good options, i guess it depends on whether you definitely want children now or whether you're willing to wait - would you just stay in Beijing for the 2 years, and if so, what would you do after that?

We've been here 5 years so no tax back for us which is fine. Regarding kids, if we stay we'll get started now, but I could wait a bit longer because I know once they're here, they're here to stay and will limit our options more. Probably won't get the job now, but we know they've siad a definite no to someone else so we must be being considered.

Lonely planet might be a good bet! :-)
