£195 for alterations?!?!

vestaluv1, 29 June, 2014 at 15:42 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hi ladies!!!

So I've been quoted £195 to take up the hem on my dress (front only) and take in the bodice. The dress does have a few layers and does have beading but I still think that a A LOT.

Would you ladies mind stating how much your alterations were/will be and whether or not your dress has beading and multiple layers?

Does anyone know where I can get reasonable alterations in London?

xx

    Hi,

At the time of ordering my dress I asked how much approximately they thought it would cost to alter.

It was a lace dress I can't remember if has multiple layers or beading, to take in the bodice, hem and add a bustle I was told to expect to pay about £180

When I ordered my dress I was told the alterations could be up to £200. Luckily I didn't need anything doing to mine!

A friend of mine was quoted around the same as you in a bridal store for all allterations but I'm having the same alterations as you and got quoted between £28 and £60 depending how much work it ends up being via a lady who does it from home and is very successful, honestly when I dropped my dress off she had around 70 outfits hanging around waiting to be done as it's wedding/ prom season!

The front of my (lace, multiple layer) dress is being taken up, the bodice taken in & cups added and a bustle being added for £175. I've now decided I want the belt stitching on rather than being tied in a bow, so I'm hoping that won't add any more!

My dress would have cost £170 to shorten. Plus an additional 25 for the bustle to be added!

However the lady asked if u would consider a hoop, I tried one on and lentgh was perfect with it! So I instead paid £60 for the hoop and didn't later the lentgh at all.

My dress was lace so that would explain why they quoted me so highly to shorten it.

I'm paying £150 in Birmingham, but I'm having a lot done as I've had to buy off the peg (last minute wedding). It's being taken in 3 sizes and I have 26inch legs so you can imagine I'm having about half of the bottom taken off! Pay all this money for a dress and then pay more to have half of it thrown away... Shirt girl problems!

I'd say £200 sounds reasonable for London Smiley smile

It cost me £85 to take up my dress (all the way round as does not have a train as such) and this also included removing and re-attaching scalloped lace edging at the bottom with multiple layers underneath. I thought that was a lot! They also shortened the corset ribbon free of charge when we realised it was far too long when I tried it on after the adjustments. That was in stitches in manchester. I am using a local seamstress in kent to do the BM dresses who works from home and is far cheaper than it would be in a proper shop (I am hoping, going to see her on Saturday) x

Mine were expensive at £270, but then I needed loads doing and she did a brilliant job. I had three fittings and she took the dress up at the hem, took it up at the shoulders, took it in a bit around the bust, waist and hips, moved the belt up and put in a bustle. I thought that taking the hem up was usually quite simple - just taking off the lace trim (if there is one) cutting the hem and stitching the lace back on. But the problem with my dress (hem, shoulders, and sides) was that before she could take the lace trim off, she had to remove literally hundreds of beads that had been sewn on individually which added hours of work.

Unfortunately I can't get away without altering it Takkaeli ☹️. I bought a sample dress which is definitely too long (I am 5' 4").

I'm having a beach wedding and will be barefoot; the way it is now I will be tripping over it and even if I was going to wear heels they'd have to be ridiculously high! Also, the dress is waaayyyyy too big over the bust.

My dress is satin, I'm paying £150 to have it shortened, bust taken in (seriously, I am not unendowed in that area but the cups are Katie Price sized) and a modesty panel added to make the cleavage less out there.

But it's a flat fee, so if I go back in September and need anything else done, it will be covered, and they're also storing the dress and veil. This is a Swansea price.

I just paid £40 to have the bodice taken in and the front hem taken up by a lovely little Italian lady working in her front room ?
