1970's cookbook - some yummy delights

KJX, 17 February, 2009 at 21:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I think I have an addiction to old cookbooks - I love the dreadful (IMO anyway recipes).

Anyway - here are a couple of examples!

Pineapple and Cheese Mould:
8oz Cottage Cheese
Pineapple Chunks
1 pkt Lemon or Lime Jelly
Chopped Chives
Salt and Pepper
Walnuts

Disolve the jelly in pineapple juice and water. Put a little into 6 jelly moulds and part set in the freezer. Then arrange ingredients (except the cottage cheese) in moulds and top up with the remainder of the jelly mixed with the cottage cheese. Set in the freezer. Serve on a bed of shredded lettuce and dress with sour cream, garlic, lemon juice and paprika to taste.

Fillet Fish (with Bananas)
3 -4 fillets of fish (plaice, sole etc)
Small amount of cream
1/2 glass White Cooking Wine
Salt and Pepper
Knob of Butter
Breadcrumbs
2 Bananas
2oz Mushrooms
Saffron

Butter a baking dish. Cut the bananas ins tips and arrange on the greased dish. Slice the mushrooms and sprinkle them over the bananas then lay the fillets on top. Season with salt and pepper and some saffron and then pour the wine over. Cover with greased paper and cook in a hot oven for about 20 minutes. Remove the paper, ad a little cream to the sauce and sprinkle with breadcrumbs and dot with butter. Return to the oven for a few more moments.

Mmmmmm!

Oh bloody hell, they sound vile. Although to be fair, the 70s also gave us Black Forest Gateau so it can't all be bad. Chocolate, cream, cherries- what's not to like?

Oh my, and I thought my H was bad! His favourite sandwich is marmite, cheese, bacon and coleslaw. Dirty boy.

Not from a cook book but the other day at a friends dinner party she did a joke dessert of Angel Delight (toffee or butterscotch flavour) and Dream Topping.

I have to say it was kind of nice and brought a lot of memories of childhood parties back.....

Why don't we serve it more often?!

I'm always surprised when I look at my mother's old books how modern some of the recipes seem- guinea fowl with 30 cloves of garlic, osso bucco, gazpacho- none would look out of place in the latest JO or Nigella. These recipes are interspersed with kidney croquettes and mixed offal stew, so it's not all good, but it does make me think that a lot of what we think of as new cooking in Britain (new for Britain, I mean) isn't really that new at all.

I've got an 80s book by Barbara Cartland called something like "Recipes for Love" and it's superb- fab old French classics, mainly, all with about a pint of double cream ?
