2 days to go and a slight cake panic! ***Updated with flash on page 2***

miss pickle, 5 June, 2014 at 12:20 Posted on Planning 0 32

So, I have two days to go ? and my lovely bridesmaid has started making our wedding cake but has been in touch saying that it is looking ginormous and that she is worried it will be too heavy for the cake stand I have bought ?

Does anyone know what kind of weights cake stands can take?

These are the cakes, the largest one is a 10" fruit and then there is an 8" and a 6" sponge, but as you can see they are all quite deep...

And this is the stand, it is 12" and made of porcelain...

Anyone make a lots of cakes or encountered the same issue and know what kind of weight a cake stand will hold?

The stand is from M&S but I have checked the original listing and it doesn't shed any light on the matter!

Cakes looking good so far! I can't help re. weights on that cake stand, but perhaps your venue might be able to advise? They've probably seen it all... and they might be able to loan you something if necessary.

If not, try a local bakery. If in a worst case scenario your stand won't take the weight/ you can't find a replacement, local bakery ought to be able to sell you a large silver cake board to assemble it on. Perhaps not perfect, but better than collapsed cake?

    Good luck!

ETA: Woooooo 2 days to go!!

The problem you're going to have is one of balance caused by height rather than actual weight. The cake is going to be very tall and the bottom of the cake stand is very narrow making it rather unstable. That kind of cake stand is meant for single tier cakes really. Ideally you want a stand without a pedestal on it if that makes sense, or a pedestal that's much nearer the width of your cake.

Can you find a nice deep porcelain.stand? Or as has been mentioned - does your venue have a traditional round stand you can borrow. They often do, although they also usually charge.

Sorry I don't have much to add to this except that I am now concerned and this had never crossed my mind before.

I am having 4 tiers of fruit and they are quite deep and I also have a porcelain stand as we are re-creating this. Let us know if you do get any advice from a professional.

I've seen ones that size on that kind of cake stand. The other option, if she's worried about stability, would be to change the design and get a 3 tier cake stand. They support each tier individually.

Where abouts are you based - I have some beautiful flat cake plates (glass and white porcelain) which I'd be happy to lend to you. I'm in Nottingham.

Tbh hun - you're so close now that you're prob just going to have to go with it. Make sure it's on a really sturdy table where no one can knock it, and when you cut it, don't put pressure towards the edge of plate. You have as you would expect got your heaviest on the bottom which will help. I think it will be OK . fingers crossed.

And lovel SWs response of nom - lolx

ETA - don't know if you have a House of Fraser nearby but found this which might help. It's similar style, just not as high and with a wider base:

It will have some kind of dowels in the middle of it to keep it stable and together so think you are right that at this stage we will just have to go with it and hope for the best ;-)

If you already have the stand, can your BM test the cake on it at it is?

I have the stand but BM lives miles away and has the cake! When she gets in from work tonight she is going to try weigh them and then I might find some books of a similar weight and pile them up on the stand for the night as a test!

Hi, from what I know of porcelain (not very much) it is incredibly strong and can with stand high psi hence why it is used for teeth so you should be fine. I would just be careful to make sure its properly centered so it doesn't topple over.

This is possibly a bit crass but toilets are generally made of porcelain, thankfully you almost never hear of one crumbling under the pressure lol
