2 "piece of string" questions, sorry

policefox lyn, 17 July, 2009 at 17:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I know the answer is "how long is a piece of string" however I thought there might be someone on here who has had these two things done in similar circumstances who can give me a ballpark figure.

Basically we are about to have some spare cash which we will use to improve our house. We need replacement windows and new carpets upstairs. I have absolutely no idea how much these things will cost. We haven't yet got the money and I don't want to start getting pestered with double glazing salesmen but equally I'm excited at being able to do these improvements so please humour me as I'm "virtual spending and virtual planning"

We have a four bedroomed house- we will need 11 windows replacing. Carpet in 4 double bedrooms plus stairs and landing.

House is this kind of design but without the rooms in the roof.

I would hazard a wild guess at 5K for the windows (assuming no patio doors) and from 2/3K for the carpet.

But I am probably completely way off the mark there.........

Can help with the carpet query. Had new carpets two years ago, four beds, hall, landing, stairs, lounge and dining room. It cost £3,200 including a decent underlay and fitting, this was for a decent carpet (can't remember the grading system) Still looks like new and I have two dogs.

Ah, no floor plan (lol). There is a huge variety of carpet available, but a heavy domestic carpet, including good underlay, fitting, accessories and VAT should cost around £1600. You should have alot of choice in that price range, including wool.

Avoid the likes of Carpetright who put a hideous mark up on accessories and fitting. Eg: We buy underlay for aprox £1.20m2, that quality retails with them for £8.99m2. If you are having a fitted product, most independants inlclude it at trade, well they do around here.

Also look out for hidden extras like door trimming, this really hadn't ought to be charged as an extra.

    Misseatalot, that's really helpful thanks.

Funnily enough I was considering Carpet Right but I was listening to Martin Lewis on Radio 2 today and a listener said exactly the same as you regarding them marking up underlay, trims, fitting etc.

I live in a small town which has a local directory, so I think I'll check in there for a well established independant and I'll also look for the same in the nearest towns (actually they're both cities) Gloucester and Hereford.

    thanks again.

If when you come to choosing you need any further help, let me know.

We're an hour away from Hereford. I've heard Orchard Interiors are quite good, maybe worth a shout x

Whereabouts are you? I'm in Ledbury. If you're only an hour or so away I'd be happy to "use" you, I would much rather go with someone I can trust.

We're hoping to have the money in 4-6 wks and the carpet is definitely the first job we'd be looking at doing.

I was driving through Ledbury on Sunday, on my way back from Shrewsbury! You're about 45mins from us. Small world!

We're in Newbridge - On - Wye, near Llandrindod Wells. Mid Wales.

I'd be more than happy to provide a quotation and bring samples if you want sometime in the future. The shop is closed on a Wednesday so we always head off out for the day to Shrews or H'ford. Living in the middle of knowhere, I have to travel to shop so can be in your direction no probs!

That's great (though I've never heard of where you are)

Once we've got the money though I'll post for you and then we can arrange.

(ooh I'm even more excited now!)
