2013 Book List *Updated 5/2/13* 13 Books Read.

The Rules

  • Every book must be started and finished in 2013
  • Once you have read a book post it here and I will keep the OP updated.
  • A book can appear only once on the list
  • Mark each book from 10 and a short description:

1) Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger - 10/10 - unusual and well written.

  • Everyone MUST keep track of their own numbers so you can keep track of how many YOU have read.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

1. The Rock Stars Daughter - Caitlyn Duffy. Very easy read, finished in 1 day. Written well. Very entertaining. 8/10

2. The Viscounts Daughter - Caitlyn Duffy sequel to ^. Not as good. Found the characters quite boring and there were too many introductions to keep up with. 5/10.

3. A Woman in Black - Susan Hill -Well structured plot line; protagonist is believable and other characters interesting though slightly stereotypical. Not scary but works as modern gothic fiction. 8/10

4. Before I Met You - Lisa Jewell. Fabulous start to the reading year. I could not put this down. I was disappointed in the ending but that was probably more the fact that it did have to actually end. Amazing story. 10/10

5. Bitemarks. Enjoyable enough, but sometimes feels like there was too much going on, which seemed to detract from the main story. A lot of character switching which I'm not a huge fan of! 7/10

6. Mocking Jay - Suzanne Collins. Not as good as the first book or maybe the second but had a couple of twists that helped keep the pace. 7/10

7. Time of my life - Cecelia Ahern. Typical Cecelia Ahern book, easy to read with lots of highs and lows and feel good ending. I finished in two days as the main character was easy to relate to. 7/10.

8. The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood. Fantastic book, interesting story that took a little while to really get in to. Beautifully written and very descriptive. Highly recommend. 10/10

9. Sons of Fortune- Jeffrey Archer. I love his books and this was another great one. Was difficult to put down, and lots of interesting twists and turns. 9/10

10. The Vault by Ruth Rendell - this is a Wexford book with a twist as it ties in with one of her stand-alone psychological novels ('A Sight For Sore Eyes') which I'd enjoyed. I tend to find Wexford books a bit wordy and even preachy, however, and this one was no exception. I enjoyed the first three-quarters but got bored by the end and therefore didn't pay any attention to the ending...7/10

11. Me before you – Jojo Moyes. Amazing, amazing, amazing. So well written and made me a little teary in parts. I didn't know if it would live up to all the hype, but it more than did. 10/10

12. The Last Letter from your lover - Jojo Moyes. I found this book very easy to read. Good storyline and a nice twist at the end. 7/10

13. The Mistress's Revenge by Tamara Cohen . Written in a very easy to read, 'journal' style which appealed. I didn't overly like the ending and thought it was a bit weak - could have been so much better. But it did hold my attention and I'd probably read other books by the same author. 8/10

1)Winter of the World - Ken Follett. 8/10. One of his epic historical novels, sequel to Fall of Giants and set from ~**** across Russia, Germany, the UK and the USA. Very readable, mostly interesting characters and gives a few new insights into the history of the time.

2)Moranthology - Caitlin Moran. 8/10. I loved How to be a Woman, and bits of this were just as good, but there were a few pieces in there that I didn't enjoy. Not sure whether that's because I didn't like the writing or because I disagree with some of her political views though. She is generally awesome overall.

3)The Kingmaker's Daughter - Philippa Gregory. 7/10. The fourth one of the "Cousins' War series, featuring Anne of Warwick, later Queen Anne, the wife of Richard III (strange coincidence that I read this in the week his remains were discovered!) The perspective in this one is very different from the others, and the heroines from the previous books are written as villains, which I find quite hard to get my head around. I think she could have explored both Anne's and Richard's characters more deeply, but it was a good story. I can't wait for The White Princess.

2)A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, DREAMS AND DUST

3)A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, AFTER THE FEAST

Both George R.R Martin- excellent continuation of A Song of Ice & Fire- More action packed and Martin can do no wrong in my opinion (except not getting the next books out yet)! 10/10

    4) The Blind Assassin - Margaret Attwood- How have I not heard of her? This book was fantastic, once I got used to the style it was thoroughly engrossing (stories within a story)- going for a 'lighter' read next but will definitely try another of her novels. 10/10

ETA Just seen The Blind assassin already on the list?! Can I keep it on my numbers tho??

1: Wild Designs by Katie Fforde

Abit blah & not one of her best, but ok to read. Typical chick lit.

2: The sound of laughter Peter Kay

Loved it! Really funny & well written!

    5) Jodi Picoult - Sing You Home, 6/10. The first chapter broke my heart-(do not read if you are feeling emotional), after that I felt like she tried to cram too many 'issues' into the story. I still read on as I found I did want to know how it was going to end...even though it was quite predictable. I think it would make a good film. Apparently it has a sound track to match each chapter but I didn't look into it.

    3) Cecilia Ahern - 100 Names, 6/10.

I read this book in less than a week, it was fairly easy to read due to the writing style. I felt that although it was enjoyable, there were too many characters and at times it got confusing. The end was pretty abrupt too. Chick Lit, but not one of Ahern's best.

    3. Life with my sister Madonna. by her brother christopher.

Really enjoyed this. His needyness & her 'i'm the only person worthy' ness made interesting psychological reading.

Ahh, I was about to add this and then saw you'd already done it - am currently reading "The Girl you Left Behind". I've read a couple of Jojo Moyes books now and think they're all fab.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks - It's a classic Sparks novel, romantic and predictable, but worth reading if you love a good romance. Didn't think much to the ending. Not as good as The Notebook or A Walk to Remember, but definitely not his worst. 7/10

I read this at Christmas. Loved it.

    4) Skagboys - Irvine Welsh: It was distrubing and dark but in a way that made the book hard to put down and really quite fascinating. Prequel to trainspotting. 7/10

    5) Life Expectancy - Dean Koontz: Not my favourit of his books but a good story none the less. Easy to read and follow. 6/10

The Girl you Left Behind - Jojo Moyes.

Another Moyes book here. Set in dual narrative. One during WW1, one during modern times. It's an astonishing story about the lengths a woman will go to hold on to the one thing she loves most. I got teary in a few parts. Overall a good book, though I wish there had been more about the earlier character. 8/10

    7) Metro 2033, Omitry Glukhovsky. The only reason I didn't give up on this is because my little brother lent it to me. No real structure, a couple of times you think it is getting somewhere then he seems to get bored, kill someone and move on! 4/10

    6) Killing Hour - Andrew Gross. Not too bad, read it pretty quickly but the character development was a little poor on some of the important characters. Easy read. 5/10

I love reading so have read a few books this year!

Woman in Black - 9/10. I loved this book as much as I enjoyed the film. The book was well written and just as scary.

77 Shadow St by Dean Kootz - 3/10. I like Dean Kootz as a rule but this was not one of his best. Very hard to read and quite unbelievable.

Still Missing ) Chevy Stevens - 10/10. So good I had to go out and buy her other book, well written and easy to read.

Never Knowing Chevy Stevens - 10/10. Gripping and hard to put down. This is an author to watch out for

Blindsighted - Karin Slaughter - 10/10. My favourite Author. Lots of twists and turns and the fact that she has kept the same characters through each of her books makes it easier to follow the story. Brilliant read.

The 50 shades of Grey trilogy - I know! 4/10. I only read these to find out what the hype was all about. By the middle of the second book I was skipping the sex parts and got very bored with the unbelievable storyline. Not one I would read again.

    As recommended, Smiley smile

8- Oryx and Crake Margaret Atwood - Fantastic, couldn't put it down, as I found with The Blind Assassin. I really love how she layers her stories, in this case from past to present. 10/10
