2nd hair trial was better but....

LEMBS8, 20 March, 2012 at 21:21 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi All,

So I'm trying to decide what to do about my hair for the wedding - more specifically the stylist. The first trial was a real flop. I have curly hair and like every stylist, she straightened it and put the curl back in which my hair doesn't like at all so it basically fell out. She did a bump in the back which was just too high and then left two pieces out in front. It was so not me and neither one of us was happy with how it had all gone. She suggested we have another go with my natural curl and came over tonight.

It went badly from the start but we did get to something in the end that in theory I am happy with. The trouble is, I don't have alot of confidence in her ability to do a proper, weddingy finish to it on the day. She kept combing and combing out the curls and then kept spraying all these different products in to 'refresh' the curls. She admitted that it was messy and said that we'd start from wet on the day and she'd difuse it and really make sure all the curls were defined.

I think there is a possibilty that she is a trained makeup artist who is self-taught when it comes to the hair... she doesn't seem to have the precision or skill - or confidence in herself either - that most stylists would show.

But... then again, I really like her, the makeup was great and I am wondering if I am being too critical or too anxious about it. If there's one thing that could really upset me on the day it would be not being happy with my hair.

So do I just go with it and have faith it will be okay or do I try someone else?

If you're worried, particularly after two trials, it is probably the time to make a change. It is a different skill. Many hairdressers wouldn't claim to be makeup specialists and I guess the same could be said of the opposite.

Go with your gut feeling on this. Get yourself some peace of mind and talk to someone who can give you the result you want and deserve. You may just find that your makeup lady is actually a little relieved, especially if she's also not been very happy with the outcome of the trials.

    Good luck!

I suppose it depends on what style you had in mind. Have you got some pictures (front, side and rear shots would be useful) to show the stylist?

I had a loose 'messy' curled half up do on the day because my hair is difficult at the best of times and whilst it isn't what I had imagined it worked really well with everything.

On the whole, even if you aren't 100% happy with your hair on the big day I really do not think it should let it affect you to the point of upset. You will have a lot going on and there are far more important things to concern yourself with!

    Good luck.

After 2 trials, you should be happy with how your hair should look on your big day, and if I was questioning the stylists ability then I doubt I'd be confident about using her on the day itself.

IMO you should look for another stylist, at least you know what you want your make up to look like, so a good stylist will be able to recreate the look without a problem.

    Good Luck

Thanks hopkins... I showed her LOADS of pictures and it didn't seem to help. I mean we ended up quite close to the right idea but not in any 'finished' looking way.

I know I shouldn't let my hair be such a big deal but for me it is. I want to look great on the day and be able to look at the photos and not wish I had had something different for the rest of my life. I've never had my hair done really amazing for a special occasion... it's always been the same old thing. I want to feel beautiful and my hair is a huge part of that.

If you really don't feel confident about it then maybe just get her to do your make up and someone else for hair...is there any chance you can do it yourself? I will say that if she is planning on using a diffuser then it could potentially look great, I had this done once after a haircut and it looked gorgeous, it really enhanced my natural curls and took the frizz out, had loads of compliments on it and it lasted right into the night! Hmm...I wonder why I didn't think of this myself for my hair trial ?

My trial was 'ok'. I was happy with it at the time but as the day went on I started to really not like it! The curls were too tight and it went into ringlets, too much was scraped back off my face and I prefer a looser, softer look so I told her and she said that's what we will do on the day. I'm a bit unsure but there's nothing I can do and I don't want the stress of doing it myself on the day. I had showed her photos too but she didn't understand what my hair was like so made the curls a lot tighter than she needed to.

IMO I would be looking elsewhere for a stylist, the last thing you want on the day of your wedding is to be stressed out with your hair. If she said she'd be using a diffuser on the day why didn't use it for your trial? I thought that's what the trails were for otherwise what's the point in having one?

You are already unsure so I'd go with your gut instinct.

"The first trial was a real flop. I have curly hair and like every stylist, she straightened it and put the curl back in which my hair doesn't like at all so it basically fell out"

This exact same thing has happened to me....im waiting for my second trial and i have asked her to use my natural curl - the way she done it first time just looked a mess..

If your not sure then you should try someone else. I have even considered just diffusing mine myself!!!

Thanks all - I generally do diffuse my hair as my curls respond best to it. I have considered just doing it myself... but I'd like it to be a bit more styled than I think I can reasonably manage. I've also considered just having her do the makeup. How do you think she would take it if I just asked her to do the makeup? Is that a no-no in the hair and makeup world?
