A bit of a 'length of string' q about solicitors

Sah, 16 December, 2008 at 16:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I'm v excited as H and I have just had a cheeky offer accepted on a house...

But I'm struggling with solicitors - when we bought a flat in Manchester we just picked a solicitor out of yellow pages (probably the cheapest) and the deal nearly fell through because of their incompetence. So I'm ringing round for quotes now and they vary from 500 to 800 pounds. What's 'normal' for a purchase only? Do you 'get what you pay for' with solicitors?

And can anyone recommend a solicitor in Wilmslow/Manchester?

Thanks - am off out for a bit but will check back later.

I don't think you always get what you pay for. There are some terrible ones who still charge very high ? I'd ask around for a recommendation as otherwise it is hard to tell. Do you have the rate you solicitor thing we have in NI? Something like that might be worth a look...

Mine was £800 I think, but it's a fixed fee which I liked. I've used her 3 times - once to go from offer to completion in 5 1/2 weeks. She's in Southend, but I've used her from London and Windsor and managed to do everything by phone/post easily.

I'd really recommend her, pm me if you want details.

We used a good one in Stockport. I can't remember how much though (but not too expensive). If you PM, I'll send the details over. They were very efficient and quick.

The Law Society is always a good place to start.

I know a fantastic Solicitor in Birkenhead, Wirral who I would definately recommend. No idea what they charge, my Aunt used to work in their conveyancing department and did all my conveyancing for free ? but they defintely know what they're doing. I'd be happy to pass on their details if you like

    I can recommend http://www.turnerlaw.co.uk/index.html

I've used them 3 or four times now and they are very effficient and reasonably priced. I think I paid about £350 last time.

I would ask around for recommendations - your estate agent might be able to help
