A bit OT - nails

Tray1980, 31 May, 2011 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 4

I want to grow my nails so that they show off my rings for the best. I've bitten them for as long as I can remember (approx 25 years) and its a nervous habit - its something I do when I feel self-conscious.

I might use falsies on the day, but would like a nice solid base for them to sit on. I've tried no bite and stuff like that, but when they get too long they get weak and snap and I get frustrated and cut them all off!

Any tips anyone?

Thanks

Tray

My nails keep breaking whereas they always used to be really good so I am trying out the CALGEL false nails on Saturday - they apparently dont harm your own nails. I will let you know how I get on.

I would say try gel nails, i have been wearing them for the last few months and if nothing else i have got used to having nails and it is so much easier to just not to have to think about them.... on the plus side you can use tips to lengthen your nails so does not matter how short they are to begin with!

Hey, i was the same, have bitten them all my life and ruined what was left with falsies, its taken a year and now they r lush if i may say so myself!! lol, i stopped biting them, had handcream in everyroom which i slatherd on all the time, so i wouldnt wanna bite them cos they taste grose and to help stop them going brittle and splitting, in the first 6months as soon as they started to grow i would file them back down, because they were so weak and bendy and would just split when they got to a decent length, eventually they got stronger so i let them grow a little bit more b4 filing, i also took tesco hair skin and nail tabs, im really proud of my own nails now, if i can do it anyone can.x hth.x

I am the same as you - I have biten my nails for almost 38 years, not through habit but because I can. I can stop but they grow to a certain length and they just are too brittle and break and so I start to bite again out of the sheer frustration....

I went to see a salon to have a manicure and, when I explained the above, they recommended that I had the calgel nails. These have been brilliant, my current ones look strong and have lasted, so far, three weeks which means they will see me through the wedding and honeymoon, perfect!! It cost £30 and I get them redone every 3-4 weeks - all I do is repaint in between as you can see the natural nail growth eventually. You just need to use acetone-free nail polish remover so as not to damage the "nail" when you remove the old coat of polish.

The therapist recommended these as they are not harsh on your nail and your real nail continues to grow beneath - it's almost like a really strong protective cover. I was advised that, at some point, I will be able to have them soaked off and leave them off as my nails will be good and strong themselves (she used to be a nail biter and actually learned to do nails to encourage her to stop... it worked and now she works her magic on other ladies).

I tried all sorts of nail hardeners and strengtheners and none worked, these have worked for me and would highly recommend them!

I used to bite my nails untils I was 16 then just decided to stop!! But I would recommend keeping them very short as 1 it will be weird having long nails after all this time and 2 stops them breaking 3 gets you used to having them!

treat yourself to a manicure once mine looked nice I didn't want to bite them anymore! x
