A case of dress wobbles ;(

victoriamarie, 20 May, 2011 at 15:42 Posted on Planning 0 12

Sorry this is a bit long!

I got engaged just over a year ago and was eager to try on dresses as soon as possible. At the time we were restricted by money due to possible redundancy, so had a fairly small budget. For that reason I never went "proper" dress shopping (didn't want to risk falling in love with a dress I couldn't afford). I went to a discount outlet and a few sample sales but to be honest everything was pretty hideous, and I only ended up trying dresses on to get an idea of what style suited me.

At the last sample sale I again saw nothing I liked. However I spotted a dress on the non-sale rack and asked to try it on. It was 2 sizes too big but once the girl pulled it in at the back I absolutely loved it. Out of curiosity I asked how much the dress was, she said £900 but offered me the sample dress for half price. Anyway I bought it, had it dry cleaned so it was good as new, and last week I had my first fitting.

At the fitting I did not get the same overwhelming feeling as the first time I tried the dress on. Even after the dressmaker pinned it all in I just didn't feel it looked "right". Now I am wondering did I only buy it because it was cheap? Did I only like it because it was the first non-hideous dress I tried on? Or am I just getting wobbles because I am nervous?

Since I bought the dress our financial situation has changed and we are not as restricted with our budget (we're still being savvy but don't have to scrimp over anything now). If I'd waited a few months longer I could have afforded something full price, and now I can't help feeling I have missed out on the chance to try on lots of beautiful dresses.

Another thing that concerns me is that the manufacturer no longer has the dress on it's website. The 2009 collection is on there but my dress has mysteriously vanished. Was it so unpopular they discontinued it?!

I know what everyone is thinking, I must wait til the 2nd fitting to see what the dress looks like when it is actually my size. I know this, I just need a bit of reassurance.

I know what else you are thinking - flash! Well I don't have a pic of me in it yet but this is the manufacturers pic:

And this is a link to what it looks like in the flesh (it's not my actual dress though)

I bought my dress very early on in the process and from china as are/were on a budget. Since then OH has had a change of heart and we are spending a bit more, I initially had a panic that I didnt like my dress, that I could have spent more ..... but I remembered that actually I never wanted to spend that much on a dress I wouldnt wear again.

Just looked at the photos and I think the dress is gorgeous! I'm a sucker for the buttons!!!!! BUT saying all that - you need to feel special on your day. Was your hair etc nice when you tried it on? When i got mine from china I had greasy tied back hair which didnt help!!

Thanks Lauren Smiley smile I was a bit windswept I suppose, rushed there straight from work. My next fitting is organised same day as my hair trial so that should hopefully help!

Thats a much better idea!! Have lovely hair, do your makeup nicely and take some good heels - bet it will make the world of difference.

And if not you can always put it on ebay/preloved etc...

It's a gorgeous dress and I personally think the quality of Ronald Joyce dresses are amazing.

Definitely don't be put off by the fact that it is no longer on the website - I doubt this is because it is unpopular but even if it is who cares?! The only person who has to love it is you.

I really don't think you can get a proper "wow" reaction until the dress fits you so go in next time with no expectations at all and I'm sure you'll be blown away.

I really like that dress. I am not a fan of most wedding dresses, but I like this... I like the neckline and the folds on the waist.

I don't think it matters if it has been discontinued as Jay-Low says, it makes yours unique. I personally would hate to have a wedding dress exactly like everyone elses, this is why I have gone vintage.

Oh, and if it makes you feel any better, I got serious wobbles when I tried mine on again... I was wearing black underwear and could see it! And it fits terribly.

I am trusting my seamstress to embellish and fit the dress so it looks perfect :-)

(otherwise I will have to rush to Monsoon or something)

Awww I love Celeste... she was such a lovely dress. Yes they have discontinued it, and its doesnt mean to say that it was unpopular. They have to make space for the new dresses and sometimes they cut dresses. It will make the difference when the seamstress has done all the alterations and make sure you look pretty, not soo much a case of slapping on the slap ( dont want to get Celeste dirty again after all) but put some fab undies on, and some great shoes..something that makes you feel FAB and go do it again.. bet its different.. and go with a positive mental view!!

When i got my dress it was being discontinued, and yet i still love it, and i still love her, get her out of the wardrobe and walk around in her... infact.. i am thinking about it now!

I think your dress is lovely and wouldnt worry about having 2nd thoughts, i've had loads about mine, but now hold pics of it on the pc (hidden from OH) and keep looking at them and liking it again - my dress doesnt come in to the shops until January next yr!!

I would stick with your dress and at your next fitting, have your hair done, put bit of make up - will make you feel a whole lot better and you will get a better pic in your head about the dress x

Don't think discontinued... think limited edition!

I love that mine was an end of season sample, no one else here had the same dress so I felt unique...

You will remember why you chose it (not 'her' that sounds a little creepy to me!!) and having your hair done, shoes and slap on will help you envisage yourself on the most magical day of your life.... do not fret!!

As someone who acted on serious dress wobbles I can completly sympathise with how your feeling.

I too bought my dress early (over a year), and loved it at first but then started looking at the dress flashes on here, completely {wobbled} So much so that I decided that I just wouldnt be happy wearing the one I had. I was looking on Ebay as couldnt fork out a great amount as had already paid out for first one came acrss a site in china and instanly fell in love with 'The' dress, cut a long story short worked up the guts ordered it and now everytime I look at it I do the typical girly ''ahhh'' sigh ? I love my dress and glad I went with my gut instints that the first dress just wasnt the one.

I do agree with others tho your dress is stunning and maybe on the next fitting you will see why you loved it the first time round x

I've been on and off this forum for over 12 years and I've seen so many posts titled 'dress wobbles' that I'd be rich if I got a pound for each one. It is very common and it seems like 95% of those wobbles get put to bed once they have a final fitting.

    Try not to worry x
