A hot holiday in January

crystal-k, 6 April, 2009 at 14:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

We are thinking about going away for my mum's 50th birthday in January 2010. All she is interested in is laying in the sun whilst the rest of us don't really mind how little or how much we do. I will have a three month old baby by then and we are possibly taking my two step-sons with us too (aged 6 and 8) but to be honest they are well-entertained with just a swimming pool.

We haven't got a big budget so am I right in thinking our only option is somewhere in the Canary Islands? Is there anywhere else that is warm in January that doesn't cost the earth to get to?

We have looked at Egypt but mum is not keen on the fact that is gets dark by 5pm!

Yes, I think the Canaries are your best bet although the Caribbean is also good. We went to Mexico over New Year and it was fantastic weather.

January is ideal time for the Caribbean. Cuba being absolutely stunning with plenty to see and do not to mention beaches. However I'm assuming a 9hour flight with a 3month old isn't ideal.

You could look at the Cape Verde Islands. Just a stunning as any caribbean island but on 5.75 hours flight. Not much to do there, but stunning beaches and lot's to keep the kids entertained.

If your budget doesn't stretch to long-haul, then I'd have thought your best bet would be North Africa - Tunisia or Morocco if Egypt is out (although suspect the early sunset applies to all!). Sunshine in Jan in the Canaries is far from guaranteed - I had a week of rain and daytime temps of 6 degrees.

I was in Cario and Sharm last January and I truly don't remember it being dark at 5pm. Certainly when we were in Sharm we were still on the beach at 4.30pm - 5pm most days. Yes, it is not as hot at that time as the middle of the day but it wasn't dark.
